Toyota Prius 2003–2009 generally falls around ৳10 lakh–৳15 lakh in the current market, with price varying significantly according to year, condition, registration history, mileage and hybrid battery health.
The second-generation Prius uses a 1.5-litre hybrid system and can reach around 170 km/h, with 0–100 km/h taking approximately 10.9 seconds. The hybrid system combines engine power with a strong electric motor for immediate low-speed response. The car uses electronically controlled regenerative braking with conventional friction brakes, providing smooth stopping rather than a sporty brake-pedal feel. Independent testing recorded 70–0 mph braking in 184 feet for a 2004 Prius.
A realistic Bangladesh-oriented expectation is approximately 14 km/L in city traffic, 18 km/L on highways and around 16 km/L combined when the hybrid battery, engine, tyres and driving system are healthy. Heavy Dhaka traffic, frequent air-conditioner use, congestion and an ageing hybrid battery can reduce actual mileage. Factory-era figures were substantially higher under controlled test cycles, so they should not be treated as Bangladesh real-world mileage.
The second-generation Prius was offered in different grades and equipment packages depending on the market, with features such as Smart Entry, VSC, navigation, JBL audio, HID headlights, fog lamps and backup cameras varying by specification. For a used car today, battery health, accident history, chassis condition and maintenance history are more important than simply choosing a higher equipment package.
It works well on paved Dhaka roads and highways, particularly because the hybrid system is very efficient in stop-and-go traffic. However, its approximately 140 mm ground clearance means extra care is necessary around large speed breakers, deep potholes, broken roads and steep ramps. The hatchback body is practical in urban areas, while the relatively compact dimensions make parking easier than with a larger sedan.
Yes. City traffic is one of the environments where the Prius's hybrid system makes the most sense. The electric motor provides smooth low-speed movement, regenerative braking recovers energy during repeated deceleration, and the e-CVT eliminates conventional gear changes. In Dhaka traffic, however, fuel economy can fall noticeably when the car has a weak hybrid battery, poor tyre pressure, excessive idling or an inefficient air-conditioning system.
Routine maintenance can remain manageable, but an old Prius requires a larger repair reserve than a conventional petrol Toyota. A reasonable routine-service budget is around ৳15,000–৳30,000 per year, excluding major repairs. The major financial consideration is the hybrid battery. Current Bangladesh suppliers list Prius replacement batteries around ৳195,000–৳255,000, depending on whether the battery is reconditioned or new and the supplier/specification.
Check the hybrid battery state of health, battery cooling fan, inverter, hybrid-system warning lights, engine condition, e-CVT operation, regenerative braking, ABS/brake actuator operation, air conditioning, suspension, steering, wheel alignment and tyres. Also inspect the chassis for accident repairs, check the auction sheet where available, verify mileage consistency and scan the car electronically before purchase. A proper hybrid diagnostic is particularly important for a Prius of this age.
The biggest concerns today are age-related hybrid-system components, relatively low ground clearance, dated infotainment and safety technology, and the possibility of expensive battery-related repairs. The original Prius was technologically advanced for its era, but it does not have the modern ADAS features found on newer Toyota hybrids.
It can make sense when the car has a healthy hybrid battery, clean chassis, good mechanical condition and properly documented history. The strongest reason to consider it is its combination of fuel economy, smooth city driving and practical hatchback space. The main reason for caution is age: a cheap Prius with a weak battery or neglected hybrid system can become significantly more expensive after purchase.
