Toyota MR2 SW20 (1990-1999) price in Bangladesh is approximately Tk 12–25 lakh, depending on model year, engine, GT/GT-S/G grade, T-Bar roof, condition, modifications and documentation.
The late Toyota MR2 GT-S uses a 1,998cc 3S-GTE turbo engine producing 245 PS and 304 Nm. It uses a 5-speed manual transmission and mid-engine rear-wheel drive. Performance references put 0–100 km/h at approximately 6 seconds, although real-world results vary with vehicle condition, tyres and testing method.
The car uses ventilated disc brakes at both front and rear, with ABS as standard on the turbo GT-S.
For a healthy late SW20 turbo, expect approximately 6–7.5 km/L in Dhaka-style city traffic, 9–11 km/L on highways and 7–9 km/L combined.
The factory Japanese 10/15-mode figure for the late GT-S was 10.6 km/L, but Bangladesh congestion, AC use, premium fuel, turbo driving and vehicle age make lower real-world figures more realistic.
The second-generation MR2 included G, G-Limited, GT and GT-S grades, with T-Bar versions also available.
The G/G-Limited cars use naturally aspirated 3S-GE engines and are better suited to buyers wanting a simpler sports car.
The GT/GT-S use the turbocharged 3S-GTE. The late GT-S produces 245 PS and 304 Nm and is the performance-focused version.
For an enthusiast, a clean late GT-S is the most desirable configuration, but for long-term Bangladesh ownership, mechanical condition matters more than the badge.
Only with considerable caution.
The SW20 has approximately 130 mm ground clearance, so Dhaka speed breakers, deep potholes and damaged rural roads are genuine problems.
It is much better suited to paved city roads and highways. The compact 4.17-metre body makes it manoeuvrable, but its low nose and mid-engine layout mean rough roads need careful speed selection.
The suspension, tyres and wheel alignment must be kept in excellent condition.
It can be fun in city driving, but it is not practical in the conventional Bangladesh sense.
The 4.17-metre length and 4.9-metre turning radius make the SW20 relatively easy to manoeuvre.
However, the low seating position makes visibility around buses, trucks and CNGs less comfortable. The turbo engine also encourages enthusiastic acceleration, which is not particularly useful when Dhaka traffic is moving at approximately the speed of a determined pedestrian.
As a second car, it is interesting. As a family daily driver, it is difficult to justify.
Routine servicing can be manageable because Toyota's 3S engine family has considerable aftermarket and used-parts support internationally. However, MR2-specific body, suspension, interior, turbo and chassis components can be difficult to source in Bangladesh.
A reasonable owner should maintain a reserve of approximately Tk 40,000–80,000 per year for routine maintenance and age-related repairs, excluding major engine, turbo, gearbox, body restoration or accident repairs.
A heavily modified car can cost substantially more.
Check the 3S-GTE engine, turbocharger, intercooler system, cooling system, gearbox, clutch, suspension, steering, brakes and chassis.
Look specifically for:
Turbo smoke or excessive oil consumption
Overheating
Gearbox grinding
Clutch slip
Oil leaks
Cooling-system leaks
Suspension knocks
Accident-repaired chassis
Rust underneath
Non-factory engine swaps
Poor electrical modifications
Also verify whether the car is genuinely a factory GT-S rather than a naturally aspirated MR2 converted to turbo specification.
The biggest disadvantages are very low ground clearance, two-seat practicality, aging safety equipment, scarce Bangladesh parts and the risk of neglected turbo-car maintenance.
A 25-plus-year-old turbo sports car can also have a complicated history. Some examples have been modified, raced, drifted or fitted with replacement engines.
That does not automatically make them bad cars.
It means inspection is considerably more important than the registration year.
The MR2 makes sense primarily for an enthusiast who wants a rare Japanese mid-engine sports car.
The SW20 combines a lightweight chassis, rear-wheel drive and turbocharged 3S-GTE performance in a package that feels completely different from ordinary Toyota sedans.
But it sacrifices almost everything practical: rear seats, luggage space, ground clearance, modern safety and easy parts availability.
If you want a weekend sports car and understand the maintenance commitment, a clean MR2 can be fascinating. If you need one car for family, office, shopping and Bangladesh's less-than-perfect roads, there are considerably easier Toyotas to own.
