Exterior

The Toyota Innova 2.0 is not particularly interested in pretending to be a sports car. It is a large family MPV, and its exterior design is built around that simple fact.

The second-generation Innova introduced for this period grew to 4,735 mm long, 1,830 mm wide and 1,795 mm high, giving it substantially more road presence than the older model. Its 2,750 mm wheelbase creates the long, spacious proportions expected from a serious family vehicle.

The front end is considerably more sophisticated than the first-generation Innova, with a large grille, swept headlights and a sculpted bumper. Higher 2.0 grades receive alloy wheels, chrome detailing, fog lamps and additional exterior equipment.

For Bangladesh, the size is both an advantage and a problem.

On the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, the Innova looks substantial and planted. In a narrow Dhaka lane, it suddenly feels approximately the size of a small office building.

The approximately 178–200 mm ground clearance, depending on market specification, is useful for Bangladesh's speed breakers and broken roads. The body is also relatively upright, giving the driver good visibility.

Higher grades can look surprisingly premium, particularly with larger wheels, chrome trim and LED lighting.

But the fundamental attraction is practicality. The exterior dimensions create the interior space that families actually buy the Innova for.

It is not glamorous in the traditional sports-car sense. It is better than that: it looks like a machine capable of taking an entire family, luggage and several questionable holiday decisions across Bangladesh.

Interior

The Innova's interior is where the 2.0 model starts making a very convincing argument.

The cabin is large, upright and designed around passengers rather than styling gimmicks. Depending on market and grade, the Innova is available as a 7- or 8-seater, with higher specifications offering captain-style second-row seating.

The 7-seat layout is particularly comfortable for long journeys. Instead of squeezing three adults across the second row, the captain seats give passengers more individual space.

The third row is also more useful than the token rear seats found in many smaller seven-seat crossovers. It is still best suited to children or average-sized adults on longer trips, but it is genuinely usable.

For Bangladesh, rear AC is one of the most important features. A seven- or eight-person cabin in Dhaka's summer heat needs proper airflow, and the Innova delivers that on appropriately equipped versions.

The dashboard design is straightforward. Higher grades offer touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, smart entry, push-button start and better upholstery.

Storage is generous, while folding the rear seats allows the vehicle to carry considerably more luggage.

The biggest weakness is age. Newer MPVs and SUVs now offer larger displays, wireless charging, connected services and more sophisticated digital dashboards.

But the Innova's cabin has a strength that is harder to measure: it feels designed to be used every day.

It is practical rather than fashionable, comfortable rather than theatrical and spacious rather than unnecessarily complicated.

Features

The 2.0 Innova's feature package varies considerably by market and grade, but the higher specifications can be surprisingly well equipped. Automatic climate control, rear AC, cruise control, parking sensors, reverse camera, touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, smart entry and push-button starting are among the useful equipment available on higher versions. The 8-inch touchscreen system used on certain specifications supports Bluetooth and, on later/high-grade versions, smartphone integration such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Toyota's published specifications confirm these functions on relevant Innova grades. The second-row captain seats are arguably more useful than most flashy technology. For Bangladesh families travelling long distances, comfortable individual rear seats are something everyone notices after three hours on the Dhaka–Cox's Bazar road. The automatic climate-control system with rear cooling is another major practical advantage. Parking sensors and reverse cameras are particularly welcome because this is a large vehicle. You do not want to discover the Innova's rear bumper by hearing a mysterious crunch. Higher grades can also provide power-adjustable driver's seats, leather upholstery, smart entry, additional airbags and more sophisticated exterior lighting. The weakness is that the technology is now dated compared with newer vehicles. There is no large modern connected-car ecosystem, no comprehensive OTA platform and no genuinely advanced autonomous-driving system. But the Innova's strongest features remain mechanical and practical: seating space, rear AC, flexible seating, comfortable suspension and Toyota's proven 1TR-FE engine. For Bangladesh, those things matter considerably more than having a dashboard that resembles an aircraft cockpit.

Safety

The 2.0 Innova has a solid conventional safety package, although it should not be confused with a modern ADAS-equipped Toyota.

Depending on market and grade, the vehicle can provide ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-start Assist, multiple airbags, ISOFIX and parking sensors.

Some higher specifications are particularly well equipped. A Malaysian 2.0G specification, for example, lists seven airbags, ABS/EBD/Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-start Assist and front/rear parking sensors, together with Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

This is important because the 2015–2022 period covers several markets and equipment levels. A Bangladesh buyer should therefore never assume that every 2.0 Innova has exactly the same safety equipment.

The basic passive-safety structure is reassuring, while the large body and stable chassis provide confidence on highways.

But there is a clear technological limitation. The 2.0 Innova does not generally provide the comprehensive forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise systems now common on newer vehicles.

For Bangladesh, the most useful safety features are arguably the simpler ones: ABS, stability control, airbags, parking sensors, reverse camera and good visibility.

The vehicle's high seating position also gives the driver a useful view of surrounding traffic.

Overall, safety is respectable for its generation, but buyers should check the exact imported specification rather than relying solely on the model name.

Driving Experience

The 1TR-FE is a very different animal from the 2.4-litre diesel.

It is a 1,998cc naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 139 PS and 183 Nm. Toyota designed it around smoothness and reliability rather than massive torque.

And that is exactly how it feels.

Around Dhaka, the engine is smooth and quiet, while the six-speed automatic keeps the driving experience relaxed. There is no turbocharger waiting to wake up and no sudden surge of diesel torque. Instead, power builds progressively as the revs rise.

The downside becomes obvious when the Innova is fully loaded. Seven or eight passengers plus luggage is a lot of mass, and 183 Nm is not exactly a volcanic eruption. Overtaking requires planning, particularly on two-lane highways.

The automatic transmission helps enormously. It avoids the constant clutch work that would otherwise become irritating in heavy traffic.

Fuel consumption is the other major consideration. A realistic 7–9 km/L in Dhaka and 10–12 km/L on highways is reasonable for Bangladesh, depending heavily on traffic and driving style.

The RWD platform provides a stable, predictable feel, while the long wheelbase contributes to comfortable highway behaviour.

The suspension is another strong point. It handles broken urban roads and speed breakers without turning the passengers into percussion instruments.

The Innova 2.0 is therefore not fast. It is smooth, predictable and comfortable.

And for a family MPV, that may actually be the more useful personality.

Variants

The 2015–2022 2.0 Innova is complicated because Toyota sold the second-generation model under different grade structures in different countries.

The Indonesian-market model included G, G Luxury, V, V Luxury and Venturer petrol versions, while Malaysia offered 2.0E and 2.0G petrol versions. Toyota's Indonesian catalogue confirms the 1TR-FE 1,998cc engine, 139 PS and 183 Nm across the petrol range, with both 6-speed automatic and 5-speed manual configurations.

For Bangladesh buyers, the exact grade therefore depends heavily on where the imported vehicle originated.

The 2.0E is generally the simpler choice, providing the basic Innova package without excessive luxury equipment.

The 2.0G adds useful comfort and convenience features and is a more premium family specification.

Higher V/V Luxury/Venturer-type versions, where available, bring more upscale interiors, captain seats, larger wheels, additional exterior styling and better equipment.

The important point is that the mechanical package remains fundamentally the same: 1TR-FE 2.0 petrol, 139 PS, 183 Nm and RWD.

For Bangladesh, a clean 2.0G or equivalent higher-grade 7-seater is particularly attractive for family use because it combines the useful equipment with the Innova's spacious cabin.

The overall verdict is straightforward: the 2.0 Innova is not the fastest or most economical version of the Innova family. Its appeal is its smooth petrol engine, comfortable cabin, robust RWD platform, huge passenger space and Toyota reliability.

For a Bangladesh family that values space and comfort more than acceleration, those characteristics remain remarkably relevant.
