Exterior

A wagon that refused to look boring

The Toyota Caldina is one of those cars that reminds you there was a time when a family wagon did not have to look like a white appliance. The third-generation Caldina, introduced in 2002, has a long, low and deliberately sporty shape, with a sloping bonnet, sharply drawn headlights and a relatively wide 1,740 mm body. Toyota itself developed the T240 around the idea of a sporty touring machine, and it shows.

At 4,510 mm long and 2,700 mm between the axles, the Caldina has the proportions of a proper long-distance family car. Yet it remains manageable in Bangladesh city traffic. The wagon roofline gives it a useful visual length without making the car look enormous.

The 2005 facelift sharpened the front end with revised headlights, grille, bumpers and rear lighting. Higher grades could receive larger wheels, spoilers, fog lamps, xenon lighting and other exterior upgrades.

The best thing about the design is that it has aged reasonably well. It does not scream “twenty-year-old Japanese import” in the way some contemporaries do.

The biggest Bangladesh-specific consideration is ground clearance. At around 165 mm on the 2.0 ZT, it is perfectly usable on normal paved roads but still requires sensible speed over tall speed breakers and deep potholes.

Exterior highlights

  • Sporty station-wagon shape
  • Long 2,700 mm wheelbase
  • Useful 165 mm clearance
  • Large cargo opening
  • Available alloy wheels
  • Sporty ZT styling

Interior

More practical than glamorous

Step inside the Caldina and the calendar immediately moves backwards. This is not a criticism so much as a fact. The dashboard is from an era when Toyota was designing interiors around physical buttons, analogue instruments and simple controls rather than giant screens. And frankly, that is not necessarily bad. The driving position is straightforward, visibility is reasonable and the cabin has the sort of physical simplicity that makes older Japanese cars easy to live with. Higher grades and special editions added leather-wrapped steering wheels, wood-style interior trim and upgraded upholstery, while standard versions remained much more functional. Where the Caldina really wins is space. The long wheelbase and wagon body provide useful passenger and cargo room, and the rear seats fold to transform the car into something resembling a small delivery van when required. The 520-litre luggage capacity is one of the car's biggest practical advantages. With the rear seats folded, available cargo volume rises substantially, making the Caldina genuinely useful for family trips, shopping, luggage and larger items. For Bangladesh, the cabin's weaknesses are mostly technological. There is no factory Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, modern digital cluster or sophisticated connected-car system. Fortunately, aftermarket head units can modernise the infotainment experience without changing the fundamental usefulness of the car.

Interior strengths

  • Excellent wagon practicality
  • Comfortable seating
  • Large luggage area
  • Simple physical controls
  • Foldable rear seats

Features

Simple by modern standards

The Caldina's equipment depends heavily on grade, which makes a blanket equipment list dangerous. The 1.8 X, 1.8 Z, 2.0 Z, 2.0 ZT, L Edition, S Edition and GT-Four were not equipped identically.

The better-equipped versions could offer automatic climate control, keyless entry, alloy wheels, rear spoilers, xenon headlights, fog lamps, upgraded interiors and other convenience equipment. Some special editions added more luxurious trim and equipment.

But the Caldina's greatest feature is not a touchscreen. It is the wagon body.

You get a large rear opening, useful cargo capacity and folding rear seats. For someone carrying luggage, shopping, equipment or family belongings, this makes the Caldina more versatile than many similarly priced sedans.

Technology is where the car shows its age. There is no factory Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, no modern touchscreen interface, no wireless charging and no connected-car application. Those things can be added aftermarket, but they were not part of the original car.

In Bangladesh, I would actually spend money on a quality Android head unit, reverse camera and good tyres before chasing cosmetic modifications. The Caldina already has the fundamentals; what it needs is modern usability.

Most useful features

  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Power windows
  • Keyless entry
  • Folding rear seats
  • Large cargo area
  • Alloy wheels on higher grades

Safety

Strong fundamentals, old-school technology

The Caldina was reasonably well equipped for its period, but you need to judge it as a car from the early 2000s rather than comparing it directly with a modern Toyota.

The third-generation model included dual airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and pretensioner-equipped seatbelts. Toyota also incorporated a reinforced body structure and door impact protection.

Some specifications also offered side airbags and additional security equipment, depending on grade.

What you do not get is equally important.

There is no Toyota Safety Sense, no autonomous emergency braking, no adaptive cruise control, no lane-keeping system, no blind-spot monitoring and no modern traffic-sign recognition. Those technologies simply belong to a later generation of automotive development.

That means the Caldina's real-world safety depends more heavily on its mechanical condition and the driver's awareness.

For a Bangladesh car, tyres deserve special attention. A 20-year-old wagon with poor tyres, worn suspension and neglected brakes can be much less safe than the same model maintained properly. Check the brake discs, pads, suspension bushes, steering components, tyres and wheel alignment before purchase.

The basic safety structure is respectable for its era. The electronic safety technology is not.

Safety strengths

  • ABS
  • EBD
  • Brake Assist
  • Dual airbags
  • Strong body structure
  • Seatbelt pretensioners

Driving Experience

The Caldina's secret weapon

The Caldina is not merely a wagon with a Toyota badge. The chassis was designed with considerably more enthusiasm than you might expect from a family estate.

The third-generation car uses front strut suspension and a double-wishbone rear setup, and that rear suspension helps explain why the Caldina feels composed on winding roads.

The naturally aspirated 2.0L 1AZ-FSE produces around 155 PS and 192 Nm in the later ZT specification. That is enough to make the car feel properly energetic without turning it into a fuel-burning monster. The FWD 2.0 ZT is estimated at around 9.9 seconds from 0–100 km/h and roughly 195 km/h theoretical top speed.

In Dhaka, the four-speed automatic is smooth but clearly old-fashioned. It does the job, although a modern CVT or six-speed automatic would reduce engine noise and improve efficiency.

On highways, however, the Caldina makes more sense. It settles into a stable cruise, carries passengers and luggage comfortably, and the long wheelbase gives it a planted character.

The GT-Four is an entirely different animal, with 260 PS, turbocharging and 4WD. That version is much quicker and more specialised than the naturally aspirated cars.

For ordinary Bangladesh use, the naturally aspirated 2.0L is the sensible performance balance.

Driving strengths

  • Strong 2.0L response
  • Comfortable suspension
  • Stable highway behaviour
  • Useful wagon practicality
  • Good cornering balance

Variants

A Caldina for almost every personality

The third-generation Caldina lineup is unusually interesting because Toyota did not build just one version of it.

At the economical end were the 1.8 X and 1.8 Z, using the 1ZZ-FE 1.8-litre engine with around 132 PS. The 1.8L was offered with front-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic.

Then came the 2.0 Z and 2.0 ZT, using the 1AZ-FSE 2.0-litre engine. The later versions produced around 155 PS and 192 Nm, with both FWD and V-Flex 4WD configurations available depending on grade.

And then Toyota decided that a family wagon needed considerably more madness.

The GT-Four uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged 3S-GTE producing around 260 PS and 324 Nm, paired with 4WD. Toyota also offered GT-Four C Edition and N Edition versions, with the N Edition receiving more performance-focused equipment.

For Bangladesh, the 2.0 naturally aspirated cars are the most balanced proposition. The 1.8L makes sense if economy matters more, while the GT-Four is an enthusiast machine rather than a straightforward family purchase.

The Caldina's greatest strength is therefore its flexibility: one nameplate covers economical family transport, practical touring and genuinely serious performance.
