Exterior

Design and Road Presence

The first-generation Toyota Avanza was never designed to win beauty contests. It was designed to solve a problem: how do you move a family, luggage and the occasional suspiciously large piece of furniture without buying a bus?

The result is a compact MPV with a tall body, short overhangs and a fairly upright silhouette. Today it looks unmistakably old-fashioned beside modern MPVs, but there is something appealing about its straightforward design. There are no enormous fake air intakes or dramatic creases pretending the vehicle is a fighter jet.

The facelifted versions from the later first-generation period received cleaner exterior styling and additional detailing. Higher grades can have fog lamps, alloy wheels, spoilers and chrome trim, while the standard equipment varies considerably by year and market.

Bangladesh Road Suitability

This is where the Avanza's design becomes genuinely useful. The roughly 200 mm ground clearance is excellent for an old family MPV operating on Bangladesh's speed breakers, patched roads and uneven surfaces.

Its 4.12-metre length is also friendly to Dhaka's narrow streets and crowded parking areas. The relatively upright body provides good outward visibility, making it easier to judge the vehicle's corners.

The 14-inch wheels and 185/70 R14 tyres on E and G versions give the Avanza a sensible amount of sidewall, which is useful on rough roads.

It will never look expensive. But it looks practical, and in Bangladesh, practicality ages rather better than fashion.

Interior

Cabin Space and Seating

The interior is where the Avanza earns its reputation. Despite its modest exterior footprint, it provides three rows and seating for up to seven people.

The first two rows are the most comfortable for adults, while the third row is better suited to children or shorter passengers on longer journeys. Nevertheless, having a usable third row is enormously valuable when you actually need it.

The driving position is upright, giving you a good view over surrounding traffic. This is particularly helpful in Dhaka, where motorcycles and CNGs have a remarkable ability to appear from locations that apparently violate the laws of physics.

The dashboard is simple and functional. Controls are large enough to operate without studying a manual, and the cabin provides useful storage for everyday items.

Age Shows

There is no escaping the age of the design. Plastics are hard, sound insulation is modest and the interior does not have the soft-touch surfaces or large digital screens found in modern MPVs.

The factory audio system is also basic by today's standards. Bluetooth, touchscreen connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not original equipment on this generation.

But simplicity has its advantages. There are fewer complicated systems to fail, and replacement parts are generally easier to source.

If your priority is luxury, the Avanza 1.3 will feel dated. If your priority is seven seats, easy access and simple daily transportation, the interior still makes a convincing argument.

Features

Practical Equipment

The first-generation Avanza's feature list depends heavily on the year and grade. Power steering, power windows, air conditioning, central locking and foldable rear seats are among the useful equipment found across the range.

Higher-specification versions can add alloy wheels, fog lamps, spoilers, improved interior trim and better audio equipment. Toyota also progressively added equipment as the first generation evolved.

One particularly important development came in the safety department. Toyota introduced an automatic transmission for the 1.3L model and added ABS in 2005, while Dual SRS airbags and VVT-i technology were also introduced during the first-generation updates.

Modern Features Are Missing

The car's age becomes obvious when you start looking for modern technology.

There is no factory Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking or blind-spot monitoring.

You can retrofit a modern touchscreen head unit, reverse camera and Bluetooth system, and many owners in Bangladesh do exactly that. But those should be considered aftermarket additions rather than factory equipment.

The Avanza's technology is therefore best described as simple. It gives you the essentials and leaves the rest to the aftermarket.

Safety

Basic Safety Equipment

Safety equipment varies considerably according to year and grade, which is important when looking at a used first-generation Avanza.

Toyota introduced ABS with the 1.3L automatic version in 2005, and Dual SRS airbags were also introduced during the 2005 update. VVT-i subsequently became standard across the range in the 2006 update.

This means a later facelifted 1.3L example can have substantially better safety equipment than an early 2003–2004 car.

The basic structure provides the protection expected from a vehicle of its era, but it should not be compared with a modern MPV equipped with multiple airbags and electronic driver-assistance systems.

Real-World Bangladesh Safety

The Avanza's upright seating position and relatively large glass area give you good visibility. Its compact dimensions also make it easier to place accurately in congested roads.

ABS, where fitted, is particularly valuable during emergency braking on wet roads. However, there is no modern ADAS system to compensate for driver error.

For a used Avanza in Bangladesh, the condition of the brakes, tyres, suspension and steering can be just as important to everyday safety as the equipment originally fitted at the factory.

A 15-year-old car with worn tyres and tired suspension is not transformed into a safe car simply because it has Toyota written on the grille. Mechanical condition matters.

Driving Experience

City Driving

The 1.3L Avanza is happiest when you stop asking it to behave like a sports car.

With approximately 94 hp and 120 Nm, the K3-VE has enough power for normal urban driving but feels noticeably slower when carrying seven people. In Dhaka traffic, however, outright acceleration is rarely the point.

The automatic version is considerably more relaxing in stop-and-go traffic, while the manual provides more control when the vehicle is heavily loaded.

The steering is light, visibility is good and the compact body makes parking relatively painless. The high ground clearance also lets you approach Bangladesh's speed breakers with less anxiety than you might have in a low sedan.

Highway Driving

Highway driving exposes the limitations of the 1.3L engine. With a full passenger load, acceleration becomes leisurely, and overtaking needs planning.

At moderate cruising speeds the Avanza is comfortable enough, but wind and engine noise become more noticeable as speed rises.

The suspension is reasonably forgiving, and the long wheelbase for its size helps the vehicle remain composed over ordinary road imperfections.

The Avanza 1.3 is therefore best understood as a practical family transport machine. It will take you from Dhaka to Chattogram, Sylhet or Cox's Bazar without drama, provided you respect its performance limitations.

It is not fast. It is not particularly refined. But it is predictable, and predictable is a very useful quality in a family car.
EXPLORE THE RANGE

Variants

1.3 E

The 1.3 E was one of the original first-generation Avanza variants. It generally represented the simpler end of the range, with fewer convenience and exterior features than the G.

Depending on model year, transmission and market, equipment can differ substantially. Early examples should therefore be assessed individually rather than assuming every 1.3 E has identical equipment.

1.3 G

The 1.3 G was the higher-specification 1.3L family MPV and was originally introduced with a 5-speed manual transmission. Toyota subsequently added the automatic version, and a 1.3 G 4-speed automatic became part of the range in 2009.

The G generally brings more exterior and convenience equipment than the E, although exact features changed during the generation's updates.

1.3 S

The 1.3 S was introduced as the flagship 1.3L version before Toyota later replaced it with the 1.5 S. It received additional styling and equipment upgrades compared with the regular 1.3 variants.

For the Bangladesh used market, the exact year, engine, transmission and factory equipment should always be verified from the vehicle itself because imported and locally used examples can differ.

Overall

The first-generation Toyota Avanza 1.3 is now an old vehicle, but its basic formula remains surprisingly sensible. Seven seats, good ground clearance, compact dimensions and relatively simple mechanicals are exactly the sort of things that work in Bangladesh.

The 1.3L engine is the weak point if you regularly carry seven adults or drive loaded on highways. The interior is dated, the safety technology is basic and the factory infotainment belongs firmly to another era.

But the Avanza was never about gadgets. It was about getting a family somewhere without making the process complicated.

If you find a well-maintained example with a healthy engine, transmission, suspension, AC and chassis, the first-generation Avanza 1.3 can still be a remarkably practical used seven-seater. The trick is not finding the cheapest one. It is finding the one that has been looked after.
