Exterior

Toyota Aqua GR Sport Exterior Design

The normal Aqua is a sensible little hybrid. The GR Sport looks as though someone in the design department was finally allowed to have coffee. The front end is substantially more aggressive, with a dedicated GR Sport bumper, functional-matrix grille and lower aerodynamic treatment. Black Toyota and GR badges replace the ordinary visual treatment, while the side styling and rear bumper give the car a noticeably sportier stance.

17-Inch Wheels and Sporty Stance

The most obvious hardware change is the 17-inch alloy wheel and 205/45R17 tyre package. On earlier GR Sport models, Toyota specified Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres, giving the car a much more serious contact patch than the economy-focused standard Aqua. The current 2026 model continues the same basic philosophy with 17-inch wheels and GR-specific styling. The car is 1695 mm wide and 2600 mm between the axles, so it remains easy to place on Bangladesh roads.

Bangladesh Road Reality

The problem is the 140 mm ground clearance. In Dhaka, this is manageable. In Dhaka's speed-breaker Olympics, however, you will need to slow down. The GR Sport looks low and sporty, but it is still a practical hatchback rather than an actual low sports car. Overall, the exterior succeeds because it makes the Aqua look considerably more purposeful without making the car enormous. It remains compact enough for crowded Bangladesh streets while having enough visual attitude to explain why you paid more for the GR badge.

Interior

Sporty Cabin Without Losing Practicality

The GR Sport's interior is where Toyota manages to make a small hybrid feel considerably more special. You get GR-branded sporty front seats, dedicated upholstery, gunmetal-style interior detailing, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, aluminum pedals and GR-specific trim. The result is much more focused than the ordinary Aqua cabin.

Front Seat Comfort

The sporty seats provide better lateral support than you normally expect in a compact economy hybrid. That is useful because the GR Sport's improved chassis encourages you to drive it with slightly more enthusiasm. The driving position remains straightforward, visibility is good and the steering wheel provides useful adjustment. The latest equipment also adds conveniences such as heated front seats and a heated steering wheel depending on the 2026 specification.

Rear Seat and Family Use

The rear cabin remains fundamentally an Aqua cabin. Two adults can travel comfortably, while three adults across the rear seat are better suited to shorter journeys. The 6:4 split-folding rear seat gives useful flexibility, and the hatchback body makes loading everyday luggage easier.

The Practical Stuff

The Aqua has approximately 278 litres of luggage capacity with the rear seats in place, while folding the seats substantially increases usable cargo space. So despite the GR Sport badge, it remains practical enough for groceries, luggage and normal family use. The cabin's main limitation is width. If you want executive-level rear-seat space, this is the wrong class of car.

Features

Modern Technology for Daily Driving

The Aqua GR Sport's technology is considerably more impressive than its modest engine size suggests. Depending on model year and specification, you get touchscreen display audio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, digital instrumentation, automatic climate control, smart entry and push-button starting. The latest specification can use a 10.5-inch HD display, while panoramic-view monitoring and additional parking assistance are also available.

Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota Safety Sense is arguably more important than the screen. Pre-collision assistance, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive radar cruise control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist provide the Aqua with a much more sophisticated driver-assistance package than the first-generation car. Blind Spot Monitoring and Safe Exit Assist are also available as standard equipment on the current GR Sport.

Useful Bangladesh Features

One particularly useful feature is the panoramic-view camera option. Parking a small car in Dhaka is usually easy; parking one while surrounded by motorcycles, pedestrians and concrete pillars is an entirely different sport. The Aqua also offers an AC100V/1500W emergency power outlet on applicable current specifications, which can be useful during power interruptions or outdoor use. The feature package therefore feels genuinely useful rather than merely decorative.

Safety

Strong Active Safety Package

The Aqua GR Sport has a considerably more advanced safety package than older Aqua models. Toyota Safety Sense provides pre-collision assistance, lane tracking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beam and road-sign recognition. The system can detect pedestrians and cyclists in supported operating conditions. Blind Spot Monitoring is another useful addition, particularly on Bangladesh's busy multilane roads.

Parking Safety

The GR Sport can also receive Toyota Teammate Advanced Park with panoramic-view monitoring. This system can assist with steering, acceleration, braking and gear selection during supported parking manoeuvres, while camera and sensor systems monitor the surrounding area. For tight Dhaka parking areas, this is far more useful than another decorative chrome strip.

Passive Safety

The Aqua also includes driver and passenger airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, stability control, traction control and ISOFIX child-seat mounting.

Real-World Bangladesh Safety

The electronic systems are useful, but they cannot compensate for a badly repaired accident car. When buying a reconditioned Aqua GR Sport, structural condition, airbag integrity, radar/camera calibration, tyres and brakes deserve as much attention as the specification sheet. A clean, properly repaired car with functioning safety systems is the important part.

Driving Experience

This Is Where GR Sport Earns Its Badge

The most interesting thing about the Aqua GR Sport is that Toyota did not simply increase the power. The engine remains the 1.5L M15A-FXE hybrid, with 91 PS from the petrol engine and an 80 PS front electric motor. Total system output remains around 116 PS. Instead, Toyota worked on the bits you feel when cornering.

Chassis and Suspension Tuning

The GR Sport receives additional chassis reinforcement, dedicated suspension tuning and steering calibration. Toyota's GR engineers focused on body rigidity, steering response and stability rather than chasing a larger horsepower number. This makes the car feel more controlled when changing direction. The steering is more responsive, the body is better controlled and the car feels more connected through corners.

Dhaka Traffic

Despite that sporty tuning, the Aqua remains excellent in urban traffic. The electric motor provides immediate response at low speeds and the e-CVT keeps acceleration smooth. The compact 1695 mm width is useful when motorcycles suddenly appear beside you, which in Bangladesh is not a hypothetical scenario but a daily feature of life. Fuel economy remains strong even though the GR Sport's 17-inch wheels reduce efficiency compared with the most economical Aqua versions.

Highway Driving

On highways, the Aqua GR Sport is comfortable at normal cruising speeds. It is not a 200-horsepower hot hatch, and Toyota never intended it to be. Its strength is composure. The strengthened chassis and tuned suspension make the car feel more planted through faster bends than a basic economy hatchback. The 116 PS hybrid system provides enough performance for normal overtaking, but you need realistic expectations. This is a sportier hybrid, not a performance hybrid.

Variants

Aqua GR Sport 2022–2025

The second-generation Aqua GR Sport debuted in Japan in November 2022. The original version used the 1.5L M15A-FXE hybrid system, FWD, 17-inch wheels and dedicated GR suspension/chassis tuning. Toyota's official 2025 specifications list it at 4095 mm long, 1150 kg and 29.3 km/L WLTC.

Aqua GR Sport 2026

For 2026, Toyota brought the GR Sport back into the updated Aqua lineup with a new 4100 mm body, 1160 kg kerb weight and a revised 30.7 km/L WLTC rating. It remains FWD and uses the same basic 1.5L hybrid architecture.

The 2026 version also receives updated equipment, including a larger multimedia display, newer convenience features and updated GR-specific styling.

What You Are Actually Paying For

The GR Sport does not buy you a much faster engine.

You are paying for chassis tuning, steering response, stronger body control, GR styling, sport seats, larger wheels and additional driver-focused equipment.

That distinction matters.

If your priority is maximum fuel economy at the lowest possible price, a standard Aqua makes more sense mechanically. If you want the Aqua's efficiency but also care about handling, appearance and a more engaging driving experience, the GR Sport is the version designed around those priorities.

Overall Opinion

The Aqua GR Sport is an unusual car because it refuses to follow the normal recipe.

Toyota could have fitted a turbocharger, added 50 horsepower and called it a day.

Instead, it took a 116 PS hybrid hatchback and made the chassis, steering and body control more interesting.

For Bangladesh, that creates a very specific package: compact enough for Dhaka, economical enough for daily commuting, comfortable enough for highway trips and sporty enough to make a winding road considerably more entertaining.

The biggest compromises are still obvious: 140 mm ground clearance, compact rear seating, 17-inch tyre costs and no dramatic straight-line performance.

But that is not what the Aqua GR Sport is trying to do.

It is essentially a fuel-efficient daily hatchback that has been taught how to enjoy a corner.
