Exterior

It Doesn't Look Like A Van. It Looks Like A Boardroom On Wheels.

The first thing you notice about the Alphard is that Toyota has taken the humble MPV and given it the visual subtlety of a government motorcade.

The huge chrome grille, tall body, sharp headlights and long 4.95-metre profile make it unmistakable. It isn't beautiful in the traditional sports-car sense, but that isn't the point. The Alphard is designed to look expensive, important and slightly intimidating.

And in Bangladesh, that works.

On Dhaka roads, the Alphard has presence. People move around it. Drivers recognise it immediately. The large body also provides excellent cabin volume without looking like a conventional commercial van.

The 1,850 mm width and 1,950 mm height mean you sit high above ordinary traffic, which is useful in congestion. The downside is obvious: narrow roads and tight parking spaces become considerably more challenging.

The Executive Lounge S adds a more aggressive exterior character, while premium grades can bring larger alloy wheels, LED lighting, chrome details, sunroof and body styling.

The sliding doors are also a brilliant piece of design for Bangladesh. In a crowded parking space, they open sideways rather than swinging into the neighbouring car.

The exterior is therefore less about beauty and more about presence, practicality and luxury.

And it succeeds spectacularly.

Interior

This Is Where The Alphard Earns Its Money

Forget the grille.

Forget the badges.

Forget the hybrid technology.

The reason to buy an Alphard is the second row.

The Executive Lounge transforms the rear cabin into a luxury lounge, with large captain seats, power adjustment, ottoman support and, depending on specification, heating and ventilation. Current Bangladesh-market examples advertise premium leather captain seats, power adjustment, seat heating and rear entertainment.

And this is particularly impressive on a long Bangladesh journey.

Imagine Dhaka to Chattogram while sitting in the second row, rather than wrestling with a steering wheel for four hours. The Alphard makes that idea rather appealing.

The cabin is also enormous. The 3,000 mm wheelbase provides excellent passenger space, while the tall roof creates a genuinely airy atmosphere.

The third row is usable, although when seven people are aboard, luggage capacity becomes less impressive.

The interior technology is strong for its generation, but newer cars have moved the goalposts again. Modern 2023+ Alphards offer even more advanced digital displays, connectivity and USB-C charging.

Still, the 30-series Alphard remains remarkably luxurious.

The biggest criticism isn't comfort.

It's complexity.

Power doors, electric seats, hybrid systems, entertainment systems and multiple electronic modules all add potential repair costs.

But when everything works?

It feels less like a car and more like a private lounge that happens to have wheels.

Features

Luxury Features That Actually Make Sense

The Alphard's equipment list can become ridiculous if you start ticking every available option.

But most of its best features aren't pointless technology.

The power sliding doors are genuinely useful in Bangladesh. So are the power tailgate, parking sensors and 360-degree camera.

The second-row captain seats are the real star. Executive Lounge versions can provide power adjustment, ottoman support, seat heating and ventilation. Bangladesh listings commonly advertise JBL audio, rear entertainment, sunroof and premium leather interiors on these vehicles.

The hybrid system itself is another major feature. It makes the Alphard unusually quiet at low speeds and can deliver respectable fuel economy despite the vehicle's enormous size.

Then there is the entertainment equipment.

High-spec cars can feature JBL premium audio, rear entertainment screens and navigation, which makes long-distance family travel significantly more pleasant.

What could be improved?

The biggest weakness is connectivity compared with today's newest vehicles. A modern Alphard can offer much more sophisticated smartphone integration and digital interfaces.

For an imported Japanese-market car, some factory infotainment functions may also be less useful in Bangladesh.

A sensible owner can upgrade the head unit if necessary.

But I'd avoid turning the interior into an aftermarket electronics laboratory.

A clean original Alphard is worth preserving.

Safety

A Big Car With Serious Safety Technology

The Alphard's size gives it an imposing physical presence, but Toyota didn't rely purely on the sheer amount of metal surrounding passengers.

The 2021-era Alphard can offer Toyota Safety Sense, airbags, ABS, EBD, stability control, traction control, hill-start assistance, parking sensors and camera systems depending on grade.

Higher-grade cars can also provide blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assistance.

The 360-degree camera is particularly valuable in Bangladesh.

Why?

Because a five-metre-long MPV has no business being reversed into a parking space in Dhaka using only mirrors.

The active-safety systems are also useful in highway driving, although they should never be treated as autonomous driving.

The real-world safety picture is therefore quite strong for its generation.

However, remember that grade matters.

An Executive Lounge with the complete safety package is not necessarily equivalent to a lower-grade imported Alphard.

And with reconditioned vehicles, condition matters enormously.

Check whether airbags are original and functional. Check accident history. Check whether the front radar/camera systems have been repaired after an impact. Check warning lights.

A repaired luxury MPV can look perfect while hiding expensive safety-system problems.

So yes, the Alphard is a safe and reassuring vehicle.

But the best safety feature in Bangladesh remains a clean accident-free example driven by someone who understands that rickshaws do not obey the laws of physics.

Driving Experience

The Alphard Doesn't Drive Like A Van

This is the pleasant surprise.

You climb into a 2.2-tonne luxury MPV, press the start button and expect the engine to announce itself.

Instead, the car can move away almost silently.

That's the hybrid system doing its work.

At low speeds, electric assistance makes the Alphard exceptionally smooth. The petrol engine joins in almost seamlessly, and the e-CVT keeps everything calm.

The 2.5L engine itself produces 152 PS and 206 Nm, while the hybrid system adds electric assistance to give the big Alphard surprisingly respectable performance.

It isn't fast in the traditional sense.

But it doesn't need to be.

The whole point is effortless movement.

The suspension is tuned for comfort, the steering is light and the cabin is extremely quiet. On a Dhaka-to-Chattogram journey, the Alphard's greatest talent is reducing fatigue.

In city traffic, the hybrid system is particularly pleasant.

On the highway, it settles into a relaxed cruising rhythm.

The E-Four AWD system also gives additional traction, although this isn't an off-road vehicle.

There is one unavoidable problem:

Physics.

It's a very large vehicle.

Narrow roads, tiny parking spaces and aggressive traffic can make the Alphard feel enormous. Thankfully, the 360-degree camera and parking sensors make manoeuvring much easier.

Fuel economy is impressive considering the size, but don't expect Toyota's Japanese test-cycle 14.8 km/L every day in Dhaka.

Around 12 km/L combined is a sensible Bangladesh expectation.

Which Alphard Hybrid Should You Buy?

For the 2021–2022 3rd-generation Hybrid, Toyota offered several grades, including:

  • Hybrid X
  • Hybrid G
  • Hybrid SR
  • Hybrid G F Package
  • Hybrid SR C Package
  • Hybrid Executive Lounge
  • Hybrid Executive Lounge S

Toyota's 2021 catalogue confirms the Hybrid Executive Lounge, while the broader range included G F Package, SR C Package and Executive Lounge S configurations.

For Bangladesh, I'd rank them like this:

Hybrid X

The sensible choice if you want the Alphard experience without paying for every luxury feature.

Hybrid G

The balanced choice. More premium and better equipped without going completely overboard.

Hybrid SR / SR C Package

Ideal for buyers who prefer the more aggressive exterior styling and premium cabin.

Hybrid Executive Lounge

The comfort-focused choice. Excellent for VIP/family use.

Executive Lounge S

My pick.

It combines the premium Executive Lounge cabin with a more aggressive exterior personality.

Then there is the 2023+ fourth-generation Alphard.

That is a completely different animal.

Toyota moved to the A25A-FXS Dynamic Force 2.5L hybrid, with up to 250 PS system output, a new TNGA-based platform and substantially upgraded cabin technology.

So if your budget allows a 2023+ Alphard, it is the superior modern vehicle.

But the 2021–2022 Executive Lounge S remains a tremendous value proposition in the Bangladesh reconditioned market.

Overall Opinion

If someone came to me and said:

"I have around one crore taka. I want something extremely comfortable for my family, I don't care about driving excitement, and I want people in the second row to travel like royalty."

I'd point them toward the Toyota Alphard Hybrid.

It isn't economical in the same way as an Axio.

It isn't easy to park like an Allion.

And it certainly isn't cheap.

But for luxury, comfort, passenger space, refinement and long-distance family travel, it is exceptionally difficult to beat.
