The Yaris X Hybrid is not a cheap car underneath its relatively basic appearance. Toyota has given the current Yaris a serious safety package, and that matters considerably more than whether the wheels are alloy.
The car has ABS, brake assist, EBD, traction control and stability control, together with multiple airbags covering the front and sides of the cabin. Toyota's current specification lists driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS, traction control, brake assist and EBD as standard equipment on the Hybrid X.
Toyota Safety Sense adds the intelligent part. Pre-collision safety can warn the driver and apply automatic braking when applicable. Lane-departure assistance helps prevent unintended lane departure, while adaptive cruise control can reduce fatigue during longer highway journeys. Traffic-sign recognition and other driver-assistance functions are also part of the current Yaris safety architecture.
In Bangladesh, the technology has practical value. Dhaka traffic is unpredictable, motorcycles can appear alongside the car almost instantly and pedestrians frequently cross roads in difficult locations.
But there is an important distinction between the X and higher grades. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic assistance, advanced parking systems and some lighting technologies can depend on grade or optional equipment.
So the X is not the fully loaded Yaris. It is, however, a genuinely safety-conscious compact hatchback.
That makes it considerably more appealing than a basic economy car with nothing beyond airbags and ABS.
