The Yaris Cross Z Hybrid is not trying to be a sports SUV. It is trying to make everyday driving effortless, and it succeeds rather well.
The 1.5L hybrid system produces 116 PS of combined system output, while the electric motor provides immediate response when pulling away. The e-CVT then does what Toyota e-CVTs do best: absolutely nothing dramatic.
There are no traditional gear changes to feel, no unnecessary engine noise and no reason to think about the transmission. You simply press the accelerator and go.
Around Dhaka, this is exactly what you want. Stop, move, stop again, move again — the hybrid system is constantly working to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
Acceleration is adequate rather than thrilling. The Yaris Cross will comfortably handle normal overtaking and highway cruising, but if you want to frighten your passengers, look elsewhere.
The steering is light and easy around town. Parking is straightforward, and the elevated seating position gives you a useful view over surrounding traffic.
Ride quality is good on normal roads. The 170 mm ground clearance also makes the car more comfortable around Bangladesh's uneven surfaces than a low sedan.
On highways, it feels stable enough for long journeys. The cabin remains reasonably quiet, although a larger SUV will naturally provide more isolation.
The biggest advantage is fuel economy. With realistic Bangladesh mileage around 20–25 km/L in city traffic and 25–30 km/L on open highways, the Yaris Cross can make a substantial difference to everyday fuel costs.
It is not exciting.
It is better: it is easy.
