Exterior

The Toyota RAV4 GR SPORT looks like someone took a sensible family SUV and decided that sensible was no longer enough. The body is broad, squared-off and deliberately aggressive, with a dedicated GR front lip, black detailing, wider visual stance and a substantial rear spoiler. The 20-inch wheels with 235/50R20 tyres fill the arches beautifully, while the red GR brake calipers make it obvious that this is not merely an appearance package.

At 4645mm long and 1880mm wide, the GR SPORT is a substantial machine. That works brilliantly on open Bangladesh roads, but in a cramped Dhaka parking area it feels considerably larger than a Corolla Cross or Raize. The 190mm ground clearance is useful for ordinary speed breakers and broken surfaces, although the low-profile tyres demand more respect around potholes.

The design succeeds because it does not try to turn the RAV4 into a ridiculous pseudo-rally car. Instead, Toyota has sharpened the SUV's proportions, added GR-specific aerodynamic pieces and given it a much more purposeful stance. The full-LED lighting and clean rear treatment keep the design modern without becoming unnecessarily complicated.

For Bangladesh, the exterior has one obvious warning: those beautiful 20-inch wheels are expensive to damage. On good roads they look superb. On Dhaka's rougher streets, they deserve careful driving.

Interior

Inside, the RAV4 GR SPORT is considerably more sophisticated than the utilitarian SUVs that once defined the RAV4 name. The dashboard is horizontal and clean, the driving position is commanding, and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.9-inch display give the cabin a distinctly modern character. The GR SPORT adds dedicated sports seats, GR logos, red stitching, special trim and aluminium pedals, giving the driver something to look at besides a sea of black plastic.

The front seats are particularly well suited to long-distance driving, with heating and ventilation available, while the cabin provides useful storage, USB charging and wireless charging. The digital inner mirror is another genuinely useful feature when the rear cargo area is loaded. Toyota has also paid attention to everyday usability, with a large centre console and practical rear-seat accommodation.

For Bangladesh, the air-conditioning system matters enormously, and the RAV4's modern automatic climate-control system is much better suited to hot weather than an old-fashioned basic setup. The quietness of EV driving makes the cabin particularly pleasant in traffic.

There is little to complain about in terms of space. The only real issue is that the sporty GR treatment comes with a slightly firmer character than a comfort-first SUV. If you expect a soft limousine ride, this is not that car.

Features

The feature list is where the RAV4 GR SPORT starts looking less like a normal SUV and more like a rolling technology catalogue. A 12.9-inch HD display, connected navigation capability, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and six speakers cover the everyday technology requirements. Toyota also offers T-Connect connectivity, voice interaction and smartphone-linked services. Then there is the genuinely useful hardware. Advanced Park can assist with parking, while the panoramic-view monitor gives you a much better view around the vehicle. The hands-free power back door is useful when your hands are full, and the digital inner mirror is particularly handy when luggage obstructs the conventional rear view. The GR SPORT also receives performance equipment that you do not normally expect to find on a family SUV: GR Performance Damper, dedicated suspension tuning, dedicated EPS tuning and a rear GR brace. These are not simply decorative badges. They are intended to make the vehicle respond more precisely to steering inputs and control body movement. the most valuable features are arguably the 360-degree camera, parking assistance, strong air-conditioning, connected navigation, large displays and extensive USB charging. The only catch is that some connected functions depend on service availability, so imported cars may not offer every Japanese-market online service in exactly the same way locally.

Safety

Safety is one of the strongest parts of the RAV4 GR SPORT. Toyota's latest safety package includes pre-collision technology, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure assistance, lane-tracing assistance, adaptive radar cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, road-sign assistance and parking-support functions. Advanced Park is also standard on the GR SPORT.

The panoramic 3D-view monitor is especially valuable in Bangladesh. A large SUV can be difficult to judge around motorcycles, rickshaws, pedestrians and tightly parked cars, so being able to see the vehicle from multiple camera angles is genuinely useful rather than merely impressive technology.

The braking system is also substantial, using ventilated discs at both ends and Toyota's electronically controlled braking system that coordinates regenerative and hydraulic braking. The GR SPORT receives red-painted GR brake calipers, reinforcing the performance-oriented character.

The important thing to remember is that electronic safety systems are assistance systems, not substitutes for attention. Bangladesh's traffic is unpredictable, lane markings can be inconsistent and motorcycles frequently occupy unusual positions. The RAV4's sensors can help enormously, but the driver still has to understand the road.

Overall, this is a very modern safety package for a reconditioned SUV, and it represents a major technological leap over older RAV4 generations.

Driving Experience

The driving experience is where the GR SPORT earns its name. The 2.5L PHEV system produces 329 PS, with a 206 PS front motor and a 55 PS rear motor. Electric torque arrives immediately, so the RAV4 does not need to wait for the engine to build revs before moving with authority. Toyota also gives the GR SPORT dedicated suspension, EPS tuning, a front Performance Damper and rear GR brace. Around Dhaka, the most enjoyable part is probably not the headline horsepower. It is the silence and smoothness of electric driving in traffic. Pull away from a junction and the car responds immediately and quietly. Then, when you demand serious acceleration, the petrol engine joins the party and the RAV4 suddenly feels considerably smaller than its 1990kg kerb weight suggests. The E-Four system also gives excellent traction, especially on wet roads and loose surfaces. Toyota's drive modes and Trail/Snow functions add another layer of control for poor surfaces. The trade-off is ride quality. The GR SPORT is tuned to control the body rather than float over every imperfection. Add 20-inch wheels and low-profile tyres, and large potholes become something you should actively avoid. On highways, however, the combination becomes much more convincing: strong acceleration, stable high-speed behaviour, excellent cabin refinement and long-distance comfort. It is an unusually fast family SUV that still behaves like a practical RAV4.

Variants

The sixth-generation RAV4 lineup in Japan separates the model into different personalities. The GR SPORT is the performance-oriented PHEV, while the Z PHEV focuses more on luxury and technology, and the regular Z and Adventure use the 2.5L hybrid system. Toyota describes GR SPORT specifically as its sports model, while Adventure is positioned around a stronger outdoor/SUV character.

The GR SPORT therefore occupies an unusual position. It has the same fundamental practicality that makes the RAV4 popular, but adds the substantially more powerful PHEV system, E-Four AWD and dedicated GR chassis tuning. The result is a vehicle that can commute quietly on electric power, carry a family and luggage, and then deliver sports-car-like acceleration when the road opens up.

For Bangladesh, the choice depends heavily on how you intend to use it. If you want maximum performance and have a reliable home-charging setup, the GR SPORT's PHEV system makes considerable sense. If you simply want efficient everyday RAV4 ownership without paying for performance hardware, the regular hybrid versions are more straightforward.

The GR SPORT is also expensive, and its 20-inch tyres and sophisticated PHEV hardware mean that running costs can be higher. But as an overall package, it is an unusually complete SUV: fast, practical, technologically advanced, comfortable and capable.
