Exterior
The fourth-generation Toyota RAV4 moved the model away from the softer styling of its predecessor and gave it a sharper, more confident SUV appearance. The nose is relatively upright, the headlights are swept back and the body has strong character lines that make the vehicle look wider than its dimensions suggest. In Bangladesh, that combination works particularly well because the RAV4 looks substantial without becoming as large as a full-size SUV.
The XA40's elevated ride height and roughly 190–200 mm ground clearance are practical advantages on Bangladeshi roads. The relatively short front and rear overhangs also make the vehicle easier to judge in traffic than its overall length might suggest. Higher grades can add alloy wheels, roof rails, fog lamps, LED lighting, larger wheels and sportier exterior detailing.
The design has aged reasonably well. It does not have the aggressive styling of a modern RAV4, but that can actually be an advantage for buyers who prefer a clean, conventional Toyota SUV appearance. The biggest exterior issue for Bangladesh buyers is not styling but condition. Imported vehicles can have previous accident repairs, repainting or underbody damage, so panel alignment, paint thickness and chassis condition deserve careful inspection.
Interior
Inside, the RAV4 follows a simple Toyota philosophy: everything is positioned where you expect it to be and the cabin concentrates on practicality rather than visual drama. The dashboard is straightforward, controls are easy to understand and the driving position gives the driver a useful view over surrounding traffic.
Space is one of the RAV4's strongest characteristics. Five adults can travel comfortably, while the rear bench provides useful legroom and headroom for family trips. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats increase cargo flexibility, and the approximately 38-cubic-foot cargo area behind the second row makes the RAV4 particularly useful for luggage, shopping and family equipment.
Higher grades improve the cabin with leather-type upholstery, power-adjustable seats, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheels and additional convenience equipment. The basic cabin, however, is fairly conservative. It lacks the digital-heavy atmosphere of newer SUVs and the original infotainment system now feels dated.
For Bangladesh, that simplicity is not entirely a weakness. The controls are easy to use, the seating position is comfortable for long journeys and the cabin generally feels durable. A good-quality aftermarket Android Auto/Apple CarPlay system can also modernise an older RAV4 considerably.
Features
The XA40 RAV4 offers a useful collection of features, although equipment changes substantially between model years and markets. Common equipment includes power windows, automatic climate control on higher grades, cruise control, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, rear-view camera, split-folding rear seats and multiple storage areas.
Later versions are significantly more interesting because Toyota added Toyota Safety Sense P to the RAV4. This package brought pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assistance, automatic high beams and dynamic radar cruise control. These features represented a meaningful step forward in active safety for the period.
Higher grades could also bring blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, navigation, larger displays, premium audio, power liftgate, moonroof and upgraded exterior lighting. The 2017 model, for instance, could be equipped with a 7-inch display, navigation, six-speaker audio and additional technology packages.
What feels old today is connectivity. Original factory systems generally do not provide modern Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. For a Bangladesh buyer, upgrading the infotainment system is therefore one of the most useful improvements. Mechanically, however, the RAV4's feature set remains practical rather than unnecessarily complicated.
Safety
Safety is one of the strongest aspects of the later XA40 RAV4, particularly on vehicles equipped with Toyota Safety Sense P. Standard passive protection includes front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, ABS, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. ISOFIX child-seat mounting points and rear child locks also make the vehicle suitable for family use.
The later safety package adds another layer. Pre-collision technology can warn the driver of an impending frontal collision, while automatic emergency braking can intervene in qualifying situations. Lane departure alert with steering assistance helps keep the vehicle within its lane, automatic high beams improve nighttime visibility and dynamic radar cruise control reduces driver workload on longer highway journeys.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on selected grades or option packages rather than every RAV4. That distinction matters when buying a used vehicle in Bangladesh because two RAV4s with the same model year can have noticeably different equipment.
In real-world Bangladesh driving, the RAV4's strong visibility, stable chassis, predictable brakes and elevated seating position are valuable. The biggest safety concern with a used example is often its previous history. Accident repairs, damaged airbags or poorly repaired chassis components can compromise an otherwise well-equipped SUV, making a professional inspection essential.
Driving Experience
The RAV4 is fundamentally designed to be a comfortable, dependable family SUV rather than a sports car. The 2.0L engine provides adequate performance for everyday Bangladesh driving, while the 2.5L 2AR-FE offers noticeably stronger acceleration and easier overtaking on highways. The 2.5L produces around 176 hp and 233 Nm, giving the RAV4 enough performance to move confidently with passengers and luggage.
The suspension is tuned for everyday comfort and stability. Around Dhaka, the raised driving position provides good visibility through traffic, while the relatively substantial body makes the vehicle feel planted on open roads. The downside is that rough roads, broken surfaces and large potholes can expose the firmer side of the suspension.
The 2.0L CVT versions deliver smooth acceleration but can feel less energetic when the vehicle is heavily loaded or climbing steep roads. The 2.5L six-speed automatic feels more conventional and provides stronger mid-range response.
On highways, the RAV4 becomes more convincing. It tracks steadily, has good overtaking ability with the larger engine and provides enough cabin space for long journeys. AWD versions add confidence on wet or loose surfaces, although this is not a hardcore off-road vehicle.
For Bangladesh, the sweet spot is a well-maintained RAV4 with a healthy engine, transmission, suspension and air-conditioning system rather than simply the newest model year.

Variants
The Toyota RAV4 XA40 was sold with different grades and powertrains depending on the country. Japanese-market versions around the beginning of this generation included 2.0L petrol configurations with CVT and both FWD and full-time 4WD, while other international markets offered the 2.5L 2AR-FE with a six-speed automatic and available AWD.
In the Japanese market, grades such as X, G and Style appeared across the model's later production years. International markets used different names such as GX, GXL, SE and Limited. This is why two 2015 or 2017 RAV4s can have different engines, transmissions and equipment even though they share the same generation.
For Bangladesh buyers, the most important distinction is therefore not simply the grade name. Engine size, drivetrain, auction condition, mileage, accident history, safety equipment and service condition all have a direct effect on ownership.
The RAV4's overall formula remains straightforward: roomy five-seat SUV, useful ground clearance, dependable petrol engines, practical cargo space and strong Toyota parts availability. It is not the most economical SUV in heavy Dhaka traffic and the original infotainment system feels dated today, but the combination of comfort, practicality and mechanical durability makes the 2013–2018 RAV4 a relevant used-SUV choice in Bangladesh.
