Exterior

Small footprint, proper SUV attitude

The Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo is one of those cars that proves you do not need a gigantic body to look like an SUV. At 4,030mm long, 1,710mm wide and 1,635mm tall, it has a compact footprint but enough height and visual bulk to look properly substantial on Bangladeshi roads. Its 2,525mm wheelbase and 200mm ground clearance give it the proportions buyers generally want from a small crossover.

Design and road presence

The front end is aggressive without becoming cartoonish. The large grille, sharp headlamp arrangement and raised bonnet give the Raize a surprisingly serious face. Higher 1.0T grades add larger wheels, sportier bumpers and GR styling, making the little crossover look considerably more expensive than its mechanical specification suggests. The dimensions are arguably the best part of the exterior. In Dhaka, where a car spends half its life squeezing between buses, rickshaws, motorcycles and parked vehicles, being compact is not a disadvantage. It is a weapon. The Raize can turn into spaces where larger SUVs would require a three-point manoeuvre. The 200mm ground clearance is another major advantage for Bangladesh. Speed breakers, broken patches of asphalt and uneven entrances are less intimidating than they would be in a low sedan. The styling also avoids looking like an economy hatchback wearing hiking boots. It has genuine crossover proportions, and the rear spoiler, LED lighting and alloy wheels on higher grades give it a youthful appearance. It is not a luxury SUV, obviously. But for Bangladesh's urban environment, the Raize's combination of compact dimensions, SUV proportions and useful clearance is extremely sensible.

Interior

Practical rather than luxurious

The Toyota Raize interior is designed around practicality. It is not trying to imitate a Lexus, and that is probably sensible. Instead, it gives the driver a relatively high seating position, good outward visibility and a dashboard layout that is easy to understand while navigating chaotic city traffic.

Cabin space and comfort

The 2,525mm wheelbase creates respectable passenger space for a vehicle this small. Front occupants get the best experience, with a comfortable driving position and useful storage around the centre console. Rear passengers have reasonable legroom, although three adults across the back will make the compact width obvious.

Higher grades improve the cabin considerably with a digital 7-inch TFT display, leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded trim and larger infotainment systems. Toyota's Indonesian-market Raize also offers a 9-inch floating-style head unit on higher specifications, with smartphone connectivity available on newer versions.

The boot provides around 369 litres, which is enough for everyday shopping, luggage and family use without making the vehicle feel like a miniature estate car.

The biggest weakness is cabin width. The Raize is a compact SUV, not a family limousine. If your normal requirement is five large adults travelling long distances, a larger vehicle will feel more comfortable.

For a young family, couple or urban buyer, however, the interior gets the important things right. It is easy to use, reasonably spacious, practical and equipped well enough to avoid feeling cheap in higher grades.

Features

Turbo power and useful technology

The defining feature of the 1.0 Turbo Raize is obviously the 1KR-VET engine. With only 996cc, it produces 98 PS and 140 Nm, giving the lightweight SUV a much stronger response than the displacement number suggests. Toyota specifically describes the engine as delivering torque comparable to a larger 1.5L-class engine over a broad operating range.

Everyday equipment

The CVT is another important part of the package. It keeps the engine in a useful operating range and makes the Raize easy to drive through stop-start traffic. Higher grades add features such as adaptive cruise control, larger infotainment screens, digital instrumentation, smartphone connectivity, parking cameras and additional safety systems. The feature list becomes particularly impressive on the GR Sport TSS version. Toyota offers Toyota Safety Sense, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the highest specification. However, Bangladesh buyers need to be careful about assuming every Raize has identical equipment. Reconditioned vehicles can arrive in different grades and specifications, and a Japanese-market G should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a GR Sport TSS. The most useful equipment for Bangladesh is actually fairly simple: parking sensors, reverse camera, automatic climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, good headlights, smartphone connectivity and cruise control. The Raize succeeds because it offers modern equipment without becoming unnecessarily complicated. It feels like a small SUV designed for people who actually use their cars every day.

Safety

A surprisingly sophisticated safety package

The Toyota Raize has a respectable safety foundation even before reaching the highest specification. Toyota's Indonesian-market information confirms ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, seatbelt warnings, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, alarm and immobilizer across the range.

Where the higher grades become interesting

The top 1.0T GR Sport TSS specification adds a much more sophisticated package, including Toyota Safety Sense, six airbags, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Driver assistance features can include forward collision warning and mitigation, lane-departure assistance, adaptive cruise control and other electronic safety systems.

For Bangladesh, electronic stability control is particularly valuable. Wet roads, sudden lane changes, motorcycles appearing from nowhere and unpredictable traffic make stability assistance useful in everyday driving rather than merely an item on a specification sheet.

The Raize's relatively compact size also improves practical safety. Visibility is good, the seating position is elevated and the vehicle is easy to position on narrow roads.

However, safety equipment varies by grade. This matters enormously in the reconditioned market. A buyer looking at two visually similar Raizes may discover that one has only basic safety equipment while another has TSS, additional airbags, BSM and RCTA.

Therefore, the actual chassis-specific equipment matters more than simply seeing “Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo” on the sales advertisement.

Overall, the Raize can be very well equipped, particularly in its highest specifications.

Driving Experience

The turbo makes the Raize feel bigger than it is

The first surprise when driving the Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo is that it does not feel like a 1,000cc car. The 1KR-VET produces 140 Nm between 2,400 and 4,000 rpm, and because the Raize itself is relatively light, the turbocharged engine gives it convincing low- and mid-range response.

Dhaka traffic and highway driving

In Dhaka, this matters. Pulling away from a junction, climbing a flyover or squeezing into a gap does not require the driver to plan three business days in advance. The turbo provides useful punch, while the CVT keeps the experience smooth. The small body is equally important. At just over four metres long, the Raize is easy to park and surprisingly agile through tight streets. The 200mm ground clearance also means ordinary speed breakers are less of a concern than they are in low sedans. On the highway, the 1.0 Turbo is comfortable at normal cruising speeds and has enough power for routine overtaking. It is not a sports car, but the approximately 10.5-second 0–100 km/h performance makes it lively enough for a compact family SUV. The trade-off is the three-cylinder engine. Under hard acceleration it sounds busier than a larger four-cylinder engine, and some vibration can be felt at idle. Fuel economy is respectable rather than miraculous. Around 12–14 km/L in heavy city use and 16–18 km/L on highways is a realistic Bangladesh expectation. For everyday driving, the formula works extremely well: small body, turbo torque, CVT convenience and useful ground clearance.

Variants

Understanding the 1.0 Turbo range

The 1.0 Turbo Raize has appeared in several grades and configurations over its production life. The Indonesian range includes 1.0T G M/T, 1.0T G CVT, 1.0T GR Sport CVT and 1.0T GR Sport CVT TSS, with equipment increasing as you move upward.

G, GR Sport and GR Sport TSS

The 1.0T G CVT is the straightforward choice for someone wanting the turbocharged engine and automatic convenience. It has the core Raize formula without necessarily carrying every expensive option. The GR Sport adds a sportier visual package and more premium presentation. It is aimed at buyers who care about exterior styling and additional equipment as much as basic transportation. The GR Sport TSS sits at the top and is the technology-heavy version. Toyota Safety Sense, BSM, RCTA and additional safety equipment make it substantially more sophisticated. For Bangladesh, the grade question is particularly important because reconditioned cars can have different specifications even when they share the same 1.0 Turbo engine. Overall, the 1.0 Turbo is arguably the most interesting Raize powertrain for buyers who want a small SUV that does not feel underpowered. The engine has enough punch for Bangladesh traffic, the body is easy to live with and the 200mm clearance is genuinely useful. The biggest reason to buy one is not the Toyota badge alone. It is the combination of turbocharged performance, compact dimensions, reasonable fuel economy and SUV practicality.
