Exterior

A design built around the job

The Toyota Probox Hybrid does not try to look glamorous, and that is precisely why its shape works. It is a tall, square, compact wagon with a long roof, upright rear section and almost suspiciously sensible proportions. The design is dictated by function: make it easy to load, easy to park and easy to see out of. In Bangladesh, that practicality matters far more than fashionable styling.

The 4,245 mm body length and 1,690 mm width keep the Probox relatively manageable in Dhaka traffic. Its 4.9-metre turning radius is particularly useful when negotiating narrow roads, crowded markets and tight parking spaces. The 140 mm ground clearance is adequate for ordinary paved roads but is not an invitation to attack enormous Bangladeshi speed breakers at full speed.

The hybrid version retains the familiar Probox silhouette while adding the mechanical sophistication underneath. Steel wheels and relatively narrow 155/80R14 tyres emphasise its commercial roots rather than pretending it is a luxury wagon.

There is also a refreshing lack of unnecessary drama. No enormous grille, no fake vents and no attempt to turn a delivery vehicle into a sports car. It simply looks like a machine designed to work.

For Bangladesh, the exterior's greatest strength is therefore not beauty. It is compact dimensions, excellent visibility, easy loading access and tremendous practicality.

Interior

Simple, spacious and ruthlessly practical

Step inside the Probox Hybrid and you quickly realise Toyota has been spending the money on the parts that actually matter to a working vehicle. The cabin is straightforward rather than luxurious, with hard-wearing materials, simple controls and plenty of useful storage. The driving position is upright and practical, giving the driver a commanding view of the road. That is valuable in Bangladesh, where navigating buses, rickshaws, CNGs, motorcycles and pedestrians requires constant awareness. The compact dashboard keeps important controls within easy reach, while the large storage areas are genuinely useful rather than decorative. Rear-seat space is respectable for a vehicle of this size, although the Probox is fundamentally designed around utility. Depending on grade and configuration, the rear seat arrangement prioritises cargo flexibility, allowing the large rear compartment to become the star of the show. The cabin's biggest weakness is refinement. Buyers coming from an Allion, Premio or modern Corolla will immediately notice the more utilitarian materials and less premium atmosphere. There is little of the soft-touch luxury that has become common in passenger cars. But that is not really the point. The Probox interior is easy to clean, easy to understand and difficult to frighten with everyday abuse. For Bangladesh business use, family errands and frequent cargo carrying, that simplicity can be more valuable than expensive-looking trim.

Features

Clever practicality beats unnecessary technology

The Probox Hybrid has a fascinating mixture of old-school simplicity and modern Toyota technology. At the mechanical level, the hybrid system is the headline feature: a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle engine works with an electric motor to reduce fuel consumption and smooth out low-speed driving. The current model also offers useful equipment such as automatic climate control on hybrid versions, power windows, keyless entry, USB Type-C connectivity and practical storage areas. Higher-spec versions can add more sophisticated safety and connected functions. The current safety technology is considerably more interesting than the Probox's humble commercial-van appearance suggests. Depending on specification, Toyota provides pre-collision assistance, Road Sign Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Proactive Driving Assist, radar cruise control and parking-support braking. That said, equipment varies substantially by grade and model year. A Probox Hybrid should therefore not be judged from a photograph of another unit's dashboard. One car may have considerably more equipment than another. The real standout feature remains the cargo area. Its square opening, flat floor and long load space make it exceptionally useful for boxes, tools, business equipment and everyday luggage. In Bangladesh, that combination is hard to ignore. You are not buying a Probox for a cinema-sized screen or a leather-lined cabin. You are buying it because the features that matter most are the ones you will actually use.

Safety

Much more sophisticated than the body suggests

The Probox started life as a practical commercial vehicle, but the latest hybrid version has moved considerably further into modern safety technology. Core safety equipment includes ABS, Brake Assist, EBD, traction control, stability control, airbags, seat-belt warning systems and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points. The latest safety package goes further with Toyota's active driver-assistance systems. Depending on specification, the current Probox can provide pre-collision assistance, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keep Assist-related assistance, Road Sign Assist, Proactive Driving Assist and radar cruise control. Parking-support braking can also help reduce the consequences of low-speed mistakes around obstacles. That is a significant improvement over older Probox generations commonly seen in Bangladesh. However, buyers should remember that active safety equipment is not identical across every model year and grade. A 2022 Probox Hybrid and a newer vehicle should not automatically be assumed to have exactly the same equipment. The real-world safety picture is therefore a mixture of solid Toyota structural engineering, predictable braking and increasingly sophisticated electronic assistance. For Bangladesh, the stability and driver-assistance systems are particularly useful because traffic conditions can change instantly. Motorcycles can appear from blind areas, pedestrians can cross unexpectedly and congested roads create constant low-speed hazards. The Probox may look like a simple work van, but the latest versions are considerably more safety-conscious than that appearance suggests.

Driving Experience

Calm, economical and surprisingly clever

The Probox Hybrid is not a performance car, and anyone expecting tyre-smoking acceleration has arrived at the wrong dealership. Its 1.5L hybrid system produces 100 PS of total system output, with the electric motor providing 169 Nm of peak torque. The important thing is how that power arrives. In city traffic, the electric motor gives the Probox immediate low-speed response, making it feel smoother and more effortless than the numbers suggest. The CVT-style hybrid transmission keeps the power delivery continuous, eliminating traditional gear-change interruptions. This is particularly well suited to Dhaka. Stop, crawl, accelerate, brake, stop again — this is exactly the environment where a hybrid system can make sense. Regenerative braking also recovers energy during deceleration. On highways, the Probox remains stable and comfortable at normal cruising speeds, although it is not designed to deliver the punch of a larger-engine passenger car. With a full load of people or cargo, acceleration naturally becomes less energetic. The suspension is tuned with practicality in mind, balancing load-carrying ability with reasonable ride comfort. The tall body and narrow tyres do not create a sporty driving experience, but they provide the visibility and manoeuvrability that matter more in daily Bangladesh driving. Ultimately, the Probox Hybrid is at its best when you stop asking it to be exciting and appreciate what it actually does: move people and cargo efficiently, cheaply and reliably every day.
EXPLORE THE RANGE

Variants

GX, GL and F

The Toyota Probox Hybrid range is built around practical grades rather than extravagant luxury trims. Current hybrid versions include GX, GL and F, all using the same fundamental 1.5L hybrid powertrain and FWD layout. The GX is aimed at buyers who want the Probox Hybrid's core advantages without paying for every available convenience feature. It makes particular sense for commercial users who care more about fuel economy and cargo capacity than premium equipment. The GL moves further toward everyday usability, adding useful equipment while maintaining the same fundamentally practical character. For many private buyers, it represents a more balanced specification. The F sits at the top of the hybrid range and is designed for buyers who want the most equipment available within the Probox's utilitarian structure. Equipment details can vary according to model year and market specification. For Bangladesh buyers, however, the most important "variant" is often the individual imported vehicle. Auction grade, mileage, accident history, underbody condition, hybrid battery health and maintenance history can have a bigger effect on ownership than the badge on the tailgate. The Probox Hybrid overall is best understood as a fuel-efficient commercial wagon rather than a conventional family car. If cargo space, economy and reliability are priorities, its formula is extremely sensible. If luxury, powerful acceleration and premium cabin quality are priorities, other Toyota models make more sense.
