Where the hybrid system earns its keep
The Probox GL Hybrid is not fast.
But drive it through Dhaka for an hour and you may stop caring.
The hybrid system combines Toyota's 1NZ-FXE 1.5L engine with the 1LM electric motor. Toyota quotes 100 PS of total system output, while the electric motor produces 169 Nm of torque.
That electric assistance is most noticeable at low speed.
In stop-start traffic, the Probox moves away smoothly and quietly, and the CVT keeps the power delivery continuous. There is no traditional automatic gearbox constantly hunting for the correct gear.
This makes the car particularly comfortable in Dhaka.
Traffic stops.
Traffic moves.
Traffic stops again.
The Probox simply repeats the process without drama.
On highways, the situation changes slightly. The car is stable and comfortable at normal cruising speeds, but the 100 PS system is not designed for aggressive overtaking. With five passengers and a full cargo load, you need to plan your overtakes rather than simply stamping on the accelerator.
The ride is comfortable enough for long trips, while the upright seating position helps reduce the feeling of fatigue. The compact dimensions also make the vehicle much easier to place on narrow roads.
And then there is the fuel economy.
Toyota's official Japanese WLTC figure is 24.2 km/L, although Bangladesh drivers should expect lower real-world results because of traffic, AC use and road conditions.
The GL Hybrid therefore has a very clear personality.
It is not exciting.
It is
efficient, smooth and relentlessly useful.
