Exterior

The fifth-generation Prius is where Toyota finally made the aerodynamic shape look genuinely dramatic rather than merely sensible. Previous generations were instantly recognisable, but the new car takes a very different route. The bonnet is low, the windscreen is heavily swept back and the roof flows into the rear with an almost fastback-like silhouette.

At 4,600 mm long and 1,780 mm wide, it is not a tiny car, yet the design makes it appear lower and more compact than the dimensions suggest. The narrow LED headlights and clean front fascia give the Prius a sophisticated appearance, while the concealed rear door handles and smooth body surfaces reinforce the aerodynamic theme.

The X grade uses the smaller 17-inch wheel configuration with 195/60 R17 tyres, giving it a little more sidewall than the 19-inch-equipped higher grades. That is actually useful on local roads because there is more tyre cushioning over broken surfaces.

The rear is arguably the most distinctive angle. The continuous light treatment and sharply tapered hatch make the Prius look closer to a modern European fastback than a traditional economy hybrid.

There is, however, one important Bangladesh-specific catch: 145 mm ground clearance. It is perfectly manageable on normal roads, but large speed breakers and steep ramps require care. Toyota confirms the X's 145 mm clearance.

Interior

Step inside and the fifth-generation Prius feels considerably more conventional than its predecessors. Toyota has abandoned much of the unusual dashboard architecture of older models and replaced it with a cleaner layout that puts the important information directly within the driver's natural field of vision.

The digital instrument display is one of the major changes. Instead of staring down at a centrally positioned cluster, the driver gets a more familiar forward-facing information layout. The steering wheel and controls are straightforward, while the centre of the dashboard is dedicated to infotainment and climate functions.

The X is not the luxury version of the Prius. Its interior is deliberately simpler, with fabric upholstery and fewer premium touches than higher grades. But that simplicity works because the cabin itself feels modern and well assembled.

Front-seat space is good, although the low roofline changes the seating experience. Rear passengers get adequate legroom, but taller occupants may notice the sloping roof. This is a car designed around aerodynamic efficiency first, conventional sedan-like headroom second.

The hatchback layout remains practical, and the rear seats can be folded when additional cargo space is needed.

The strongest part of the cabin is probably the atmosphere while driving. Hybrid operation keeps the engine quiet at low speeds, and that makes ordinary city journeys feel remarkably calm.

Features

The Prius X is not intended to overwhelm you with luxury equipment. Instead, it concentrates on the technology that matters during everyday driving.

Toyota Safety Sense is the headline feature. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure assistance, lane-tracing assistance, traffic-sign recognition and adaptive cruise control make the fifth-generation Prius far more technologically sophisticated than older versions.

The X also gets the essentials: power windows, automatic climate control, smart entry, push-button starting, digital instrumentation, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connectivity and LED lighting.

Equipment varies between imported Japanese units, however. A car advertised as an X may have navigation, parking sensors, rear camera or additional equipment that another X does not have. Several Bangladesh listings demonstrate this variation, with different X cars advertised with rear cameras, navigation, parking sensors and different comfort equipment.

This is why the exact chassis number and equipment specification matter when buying a reconditioned Prius X.

What the X lacks compared with higher grades is equally important. Premium seating, larger wheels, upgraded displays and additional convenience equipment are not universal. The result is a Prius that feels technologically advanced without trying to become a luxury car.

Safety

Safety is one of the strongest parts of the fifth-generation Prius.

Toyota built the new generation around a modern platform and equipped the range with the latest Toyota Safety Sense package. The X benefits from fundamental systems including ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, traction control, electronic stability control, multiple airbags, ISOFIX and electronic parking braking.

Then there is the electronic safety net. Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking can intervene when a potential frontal collision is detected. Lane-departure warning and lane-tracing assistance help maintain the vehicle's position, while traffic-sign recognition can identify relevant road signs. Adaptive cruise control makes highway driving less tiring.

Depending on equipment, additional technology such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assistance and additional camera functions can be available.

The important point with a reconditioned car is that ADAS hardware must be inspected, not merely assumed from the model name. A poorly repaired front bumper, incorrectly calibrated radar or damaged camera can affect these systems.

Toyota confirms Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment across the fifth-generation Prius lineup.

Driving Experience

The Prius X is not the quickest version of the fifth-generation Prius, and that is precisely why the distinction between X/U and G/Z matters.

Under the bonnet sits Toyota's 1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle engine, producing 98 PS and 142 Nm. The front electric motor adds 95 PS and 185 Nm, creating a hybrid system with considerably more usable low-speed response than the petrol engine's figures suggest.

The E-CVT is exceptionally smooth. There are no traditional gear changes, no sudden shifts and no drama when crawling through traffic. Press the accelerator and the electric motor immediately contributes, while the petrol engine joins progressively when required.

That behaviour suits Dhaka extremely well. Stop, move, brake, stop again — the hybrid system is designed for exactly this kind of work. Regenerative braking also recovers energy every time the car slows down.

On the highway, the X is comfortable and stable, although it does not have the same acceleration reserve as the 2.0L Prius G or Z. Overtaking with a full passenger load requires more planning.

Ride quality is helped by the 17-inch tyre configuration, although the 145 mm clearance remains the bigger concern on rough roads.

Toyota's official X specification confirms ventilated front discs, rear discs and combined hydraulic/regenerative braking.

Variants

The fifth-generation Japanese Prius lineup is more complicated than simply choosing between different equipment packages.

The X and U use the 1.8L hybrid system, while the G and Z use Toyota's more powerful 2.0L hybrid system. Toyota explicitly confirms this distinction.

The X is the straightforward 1.8L option. It focuses on efficient operation and essential equipment, and its 17-inch wheels are also more practical for rougher roads than the larger wheel setups.

The U is also 1.8L but was developed around Toyota's KINTO Unlimited subscription concept in Japan. It should therefore not simply be treated as a higher or lower X; the equipment and ownership concept are different.

The G moves to the 2.0L hybrid system and provides substantially stronger performance, while the Z sits at the top of the conventional hybrid range with more premium equipment.

E-Four AWD versions are also available for the relevant grades, while the common Bangladesh X listings are generally 2WD/FWD. Toyota's official X catalogue and used-car data confirm both drivetrain configurations.

For the Bangladesh market, the X is particularly interesting because it brings the radical new Prius design, excellent hybrid efficiency and modern safety technology at a lower equipment level than the 2.0L versions. Current local listings place 2023 X cars roughly in the high-30s to low-40s lakh range.
