Exterior

The Prius Alpha S L Selection is an interesting reminder that Toyota once built a family car around aerodynamics rather than simply putting a big square box on wheels. The Alpha stretches the familiar Prius silhouette into a longer, taller body, giving it the practicality of a family wagon while retaining the slippery shape that helps the hybrid system save fuel.

At 4,630 mm long, 1,775 mm wide and 1,575 mm high, it has a substantial footprint without becoming difficult to handle in Dhaka. The 2,780 mm wheelbase provides the visual proportions of a proper family car, while the relatively narrow body remains manageable in urban streets. Toyota's official specification confirms these dimensions for the final S L Selection.

But the L Selection is where the budget nature of the grade becomes obvious. Instead of fancy alloys, you get 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Instead of LED headlights, the standard specification uses projector halogen units. Front fog lamps are optional rather than standard.

That sounds rather basic, because it is. Yet the overall shape still looks purposeful.

The large rear opening is particularly useful in Bangladesh. Grocery bags, luggage and family equipment are much easier to load than into a conventional sedan.

The weak point is ground clearance. Approximately 145 mm is acceptable on paved roads but demands caution over Dhaka's speed breakers and damaged surfaces.

The L Selection therefore looks sensible rather than luxurious. It does not pretend to be the premium Alpha. It is the Alpha designed to get the family moving without wasting money on decoration.

Interior

The interior of the Prius Alpha S L Selection is where Toyota's cost-cutting strategy becomes obvious. This is not the Alpha for someone who wants leather, power seats and a dashboard covered in expensive-looking trim. It is the version designed to deliver the fundamental Prius Alpha experience at a lower purchase price. The seats are fabric, the steering wheel is urethane rather than leather and the driver's seat uses manual adjustment. Toyota also removes the second-row centre armrest from the L Selection. But the important stuff remains. The cabin is spacious, the driving position is comfortable and the 2,780 mm wheelbase gives passengers useful room. The five-seat configuration is particularly practical because the entire rear area is available for passengers and luggage rather than sacrificing space for a third row. And then there is the boot. Toyota's five-seat Prius Alpha provides 535 litres of luggage capacity, rising to around 1,070 litres with the rear seats folded. That is an enormous practical advantage over a normal Prius hatchback. The cabin does feel old by today's standards. A modern Toyota would give you a large central touchscreen, smartphone integration and far more digital functionality. The S L Selection was often sold without factory audio equipment, so many Bangladesh-market cars have aftermarket multimedia systems. That is not necessarily a disaster. In fact, a good aftermarket Android system can make the car much more convenient. The interior's biggest strength is therefore not luxury. It is space, simplicity and practicality.

Features

If you want to understand the S L Selection, look at what Toyota removed. This grade was designed as the entry-level Prius Alpha, and the equipment list reflects that philosophy. It still provides automatic climate control, power windows, tilt-and-telescopic steering, cruise control, smart entry, push-button starting, fabric seats and Toyota Safety Sense. Toyota's equipment list confirms the basic comfort and safety package. But it deliberately avoids expensive extras. There are no standard alloy wheels, no leather steering wheel, no power driver's seat, no factory navigation system and no factory touchscreen entertainment system. Front fog lamps are optional, while the standard headlights are halogen projector units. For a Bangladesh buyer, this is actually an interesting proposition. You are paying for the hybrid powertrain and practical body, rather than a long list of luxury equipment. And because the car is now commonly sold used, aftermarket modifications can change the experience considerably. Many cars receive Android head units, reverse cameras, upgraded lighting and alloy wheels after arriving in Bangladesh. Those upgrades can be useful, but CarHub should distinguish original equipment from aftermarket additions. The most important factory feature is arguably Toyota Safety Sense. It gives the older Alpha a meaningful active-safety package despite its age. Ultimately, the S L Selection is not feature-rich. It is feature-efficient. It provides the essentials, saves money on cosmetic equipment and leaves buyers free to upgrade the infotainment later.

Safety

The Prius Alpha S L Selection may be a basic grade, but Toyota did not treat safety as something to be stripped away. The final Alpha range received Toyota Safety Sense as standard, while the basic passive-safety equipment includes airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, traction control and S-VSC. The exact S L Selection specification confirms driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS, traction control, Brake Assist, EBD, three-point rear belts and Toyota's S-VSC stability-control system. That is reassuring in Bangladesh traffic. Dhaka driving can be chaotic. Motorcycles squeeze between lanes, buses stop unexpectedly and pedestrians frequently cross busy roads. Forward collision mitigation and lane-departure assistance cannot eliminate those hazards, but they can provide an additional safety layer. The car's relatively upright seating position also gives the driver a useful view of surrounding traffic. However, age changes the equation. A Prius Alpha arriving in Bangladesh may have spent many years on Japanese roads before import. Therefore, airbags, sensors, cameras and safety electronics should be checked on the individual car rather than assumed to be perfect. The brakes are also worth inspecting. The Alpha uses ventilated front discs and rear discs, with regenerative braking integrated into the hybrid system. Toyota's official specification confirms this arrangement. The S L Selection cannot compete with a modern 2026 Toyota's complete ADAS package. But for its generation, the combination of airbags, stability control, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and Toyota Safety Sense gives it a respectable safety foundation.

Driving Experience

The Prius Alpha S L Selection is not fast. It is not supposed to be. Its mission is to carry people and luggage efficiently while making city traffic as painless as possible. The 1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle engine works with Toyota's hybrid motor and e-CVT. The petrol engine itself produces 99 PS and 142 Nm, while the electric motor provides strong low-speed assistance. The resulting hybrid system is generally quoted at around 136 PS. In Dhaka, this powertrain makes much more sense than the numbers suggest. The car can creep through congestion smoothly, use electric assistance at low speeds and recover energy during braking. There is no conventional automatic gearbox constantly shifting between ratios. That makes the driving experience exceptionally calm. On an open highway, the long wheelbase gives the Alpha a stable and comfortable character. It is perfectly capable of maintaining highway speeds, but it is not a vehicle that rewards aggressive overtaking. Put five adults and luggage inside and the modest 1.8L system becomes noticeably more relaxed. The reward comes at the fuel pump. A healthy Alpha can realistically achieve around 14–17 km/L in Bangladesh city driving and 19–22 km/L on highways, although heavy traffic and AC use will reduce those numbers. Ride comfort is generally good, but ground clearance remains a concern. Speed breakers should be crossed slowly, and potholes deserve respect. The S L Selection therefore delivers exactly what its badge promises: a simple, economical hybrid family car. It is not exciting in the traditional sense, but in Dhaka traffic, smoothness and fuel economy are often far more useful than speed.

Variants

The Prius Alpha lineup is built around two broad philosophies: S for value and G for additional equipment, with Touring Selection versions adding sportier equipment. Within the S family, the S L Selection is the simplified entry grade, while the regular S adds useful equipment such as alloy wheels, front fog lamps and additional interior convenience features.

The S L Selection is unusual because it was offered only as a five-seater in the final Japanese lineup. Toyota's 2020–2021 catalogue identifies the S L Selection specifically as ZVW41W with five seats.

That makes the variant particularly straightforward. There is no third-row compromise and no seven-seat configuration to confuse the specification.

Above it sits the regular S, followed by S Touring Selection. G and G Touring Selection provide more premium equipment, while special versions such as S Tune Black II and GR Sport add distinctive styling and, in the GR Sport's case, chassis-focused upgrades. Toyota's official model history confirms this grade structure.

For Bangladesh, the S L Selection makes sense when purchase price matters more than equipment. It gives you the same fundamental 1.8L hybrid architecture, e-CVT and spacious five-seat body.

But there is a catch: the savings come with a visibly basic specification. If the price difference between an S L Selection and regular S is small, the additional equipment of the S becomes meaningful.

The L Selection is therefore best understood as the no-nonsense Prius Alpha. It is not the fanciest, fastest or most technologically equipped version. It is the one that concentrates the money on the hybrid system and useful space.
