The Toyota Hilux Z Adventure has the visual subtlety of a rhinoceros wearing hiking boots. It is large, square-shouldered and deliberately aggressive, which is exactly what a top-spec Hilux should be.
The latest-generation Hilux measures 5,325 mm long, 1,885 mm wide and 1,865 mm tall. In Bangladesh that means two things. First, it looks spectacular on the highway. Second, parking it in a crowded Dhaka shopping centre becomes an exercise in geometry, patience and occasionally prayer.
The Z Adventure differentiates itself from the regular Z with a much more adventurous exterior treatment. Black wheels, black exterior detailing, more pronounced lower protection, side cladding and the sports-bar treatment around the cargo bed give it considerably more visual attitude.
The 18-inch 265/60R18 tyres also fill the wheel arches properly, while LED lighting gives the front and rear a much more contemporary appearance than the previous-generation Hilux.
The cargo bed remains a serious piece of equipment rather than a decorative shelf. Toyota has also paid attention to usability, with integrated steps and tailgate assistance that make loading less of an upper-body workout.
The 215 mm ground clearance is particularly useful in Bangladesh. Speed breakers, broken village roads, flooded sections and badly repaired pavement are precisely the environments where a low crossover begins asking philosophical questions about its life choices.
The downside is unavoidable: this is a huge pickup. Narrow roads, old Dhaka streets and tight parking spaces are not its natural habitat.
But visually, the Z Adventure gets the message exactly right:
this is a Hilux that expects to be used.
