Exterior

A commercial van that refuses to look embarrassed

The Toyota Hiace has never pretended to be a sports car, and this is probably for the best because it would be a rather depressing attempt.

Instead, the latest Hiace continues the H200's extremely successful formula: make the body large, upright and highly practical, then give it just enough styling to stop it looking like something that delivers industrial washing machines.

At 5,380 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 2,285 mm high, the current passenger Hiace is a substantial machine. In Bangladesh, this means excellent road presence but also a permanent reminder that Dhaka was not designed by people who anticipated 5.4-metre vans.

The tall roof is particularly useful. The current Commuter is a high-roof configuration, making entry and exit considerably easier for passengers in the rear. Large windows and upright bodywork provide excellent visibility, while the wide mirrors are invaluable when navigating buses, CNGs, rickshaws and motorcycles.

The design is deliberately conservative. There are no ridiculous fake vents or aggressive body creases trying to convince you that this is a Formula One car with fourteen seats. The Hiace simply looks sturdy.

The 195/80 R15 LT tyres are also sensible for Bangladesh because they provide a useful amount of sidewall compared with fashionable low-profile tyres.

It is not beautiful. It is better than beautiful: it looks like it will still be working long after your neighbour's fashionable crossover has developed an electrical fault.

Interior

Designed around humans, not Instagram

Inside the Hiace, Toyota has followed an ancient and remarkably sensible rule: if you are building a passenger van, make sure people can actually fit inside it.

The Commuter provides seating for 14 people, arranged to make maximum use of the enormous cabin. This is where the Hiace makes most SUVs look faintly ridiculous. You can put a family into a seven-seat SUV, or you can put an entire extended family into a Hiace and still have room for someone to complain about the music.

The high roof gives passengers generous headroom, while the wide body makes movement through the cabin practical. Rear air-conditioning is particularly important for Bangladesh because a large cabin filled with passengers becomes a mobile greenhouse without proper cooling.

The dashboard is straightforward and functional. It does not have the theatrical ambience of a modern Lexus, but the controls are generally easy to understand. The elevated driving position gives the driver excellent visibility, while the large windscreen makes judging the vehicle's front corners easier than the dimensions suggest.

What the Hiace lacks is luxury. Depending on grade, you can get better seats, smart entry, upgraded audio and other convenience equipment, but the fundamental interior remains commercial.

That is not really a criticism.

For a Toyota Hiace 14-seater in Bangladesh, durability, easy cleaning, powerful AC, comfortable passenger seating and easy access matter far more than decorative dashboard lighting.

The Hiace understands its assignment.

Features

The important technology has finally arrived

Older Hiaces were famous for doing almost everything mechanically and expecting the driver to provide the intelligence.

The latest versions are rather more sophisticated.

The biggest improvement is Toyota Safety Sense. Current Hiace models can use millimetre-wave radar and a monocular camera to provide Pre-Collision Safety, Lane Departure Alert, Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High Beam and Road Sign Assist. Toyota also supports software updates for the safety system on equipped vehicles.

For a vehicle carrying fourteen people, that is rather more important than having a fancy stereo.

Smart Entry and Start is available on current configurations, allowing the driver to unlock the vehicle and start it without removing the electronic key.

Rear air-conditioning, power windows, central locking, automatic lighting, wireless remote locking and multiple storage areas make everyday operation easier.

However, buyers need to understand the enormous variation between Hiace grades. A Japanese Super GL van, a Commuter and a basic commercial configuration are not equipped identically. Touchscreen navigation, cameras, USB equipment, premium audio and other electronics can be optional or dealer-installed.

That is why a Bangladesh-market Hiace should be checked by exact chassis and grade, not simply by model name.

The best feature of all, however, remains the enormous passenger cabin. Toyota has spent decades perfecting the art of making one vehicle carry an unreasonable number of people without collapsing under the responsibility.

Safety

The latest Hiace is considerably more sophisticated in safety than the early H200 models that became familiar throughout Bangladesh. The current package includes ABS, Brake Assist, EBD, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and Emergency Brake Signal. Toyota Safety Sense adds the more interesting systems: Pre-Collision Safety, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Radar Cruise Control and Road Sign Assist. Pre-Collision Safety can assist in detecting hazards ahead and reducing collision severity. Lane Departure Alert helps warn the driver if the vehicle moves out of its lane unintentionally, while Radar Cruise Control can reduce the workload on longer highway journeys. Automatic High Beam is useful on poorly lit roads, although Bangladesh traffic means the driver still needs to remain fully involved. The physical size of the Hiace also provides some advantages. The driving position is high and visibility is generally excellent. Large mirrors give the driver a good view of surrounding traffic. But there is an important caveat: a Hiace is still a large rear-wheel-drive van. It does not magically become a small car because it has radar. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and autonomous parking are not core characteristics of the current Commuter specification and should not be assumed simply because a particular imported vehicle has an aftermarket screen or camera. For Bangladesh, the later Hiace is therefore a strong safety proposition, particularly compared with older examples. Just remember that fourteen passengers do not make braking physics optional. The full features review puts the safety kit alongside the rest of the vehicle's technology, while the driving experience review explains how the car behaves on the road. Driving Experience

Torque first, speed somewhere much later

The 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV diesel engine is exactly what a Hiace needs. It produces 151 PS and 300 Nm, with maximum torque available from a broad 1,000–3,400 rpm range. Toyota pairs it with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The horsepower number is not particularly exciting. The torque number is the one that matters. Load the Hiace with passengers, luggage and enough air-conditioning equipment to cool a small shopping mall, and the engine still has enough muscle to get moving without behaving as though it has been asked to tow the Burj Khalifa. Acceleration to 100 km/h is approximately 14–16 seconds, depending on load and conditions. That sounds slow because it is slow. But the Hiace is not supposed to win drag races. It is supposed to merge into traffic, climb highways and carry passengers without drama. In Dhaka, the upright driving position and excellent visibility are useful. The problem is the vehicle's physical size. Parking requires planning, U-turns require patience and narrow roads require an awareness of where the rear corners are. On highways, the Hiace makes considerably more sense. The diesel engine settles into a relaxed rhythm, the automatic gearbox reduces driver workload and the large cabin makes long journeys more comfortable. Fuel economy in Bangladesh will typically be around 7–9 km/L in city traffic and 10–12 km/L on highways. It is not fast. It is wonderfully useful.

Variants

The Hiace has become a small automotive universe

One of the easiest mistakes to make with Toyota Hiace is assuming there is only one version.

There isn't.

The H200 family has been offered in numerous configurations, including Commuter, GL, DX and Super GL, with passenger, van and specialized body configurations. Engine choices also include petrol and diesel versions depending on market and year.

For Bangladesh, the important distinction is between vehicles designed primarily for commercial passenger transport and those designed for private or premium use.

The Commuter is the obvious choice when passenger capacity is the priority. The current Japanese Commuter accommodates 14 people and uses the high-roof body.

The GL offers a useful balance of practicality and equipment, while Super GL moves toward a more comfortable and premium interpretation of the Hiace. Super GL versions are particularly popular in Bangladesh's reconditioned market, and current 2022–2025 listings can command around Tk 44–55 lakh depending on specification and condition.

For Bangladesh, I would choose the 2.8 diesel if the vehicle will carry passengers regularly, travel long distances or operate commercially. The 300 Nm torque is far more useful under load than chasing a larger horsepower figure.

The petrol versions can make sense for buyers who mainly operate within the city and prefer simpler petrol ownership.

Overall, the Hiace remains one of those rare vehicles where buying the sensible version is actually the exciting choice.

You get a huge cabin, excellent durability, strong resale demand and a drivetrain designed to work hard.

That is why Bangladesh still loves it.
