Exterior

The GR Yaris RZ High Performance looks like Toyota accidentally gave a small hatchback a rally driver's steroid prescription. The body is short at 3,995mm but unusually wide at 1,805mm, and those swollen wheel arches give the car the stance of something that has spent considerably more time on a racetrack than in a supermarket car park. The roof is low, the front is aggressive and the rear spoiler makes it abundantly clear that this Yaris has absolutely no intention of being sensible. The three-door body is one of its defining characteristics. It sacrifices everyday convenience for a much more purposeful silhouette, and the wide rear track visually pushes the car toward the road. RZ High Performance versions use 18-inch performance wheels with 225/40 tyres, while higher-spec versions can receive lightweight BBS forged wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. LED lighting, aggressive bumpers and GR-specific detailing complete the package. There is one Bangladesh problem: the roads. With only around 130mm of ground clearance, large speed breakers, potholes and broken shoulders require caution. Toyota itself warns about underbody contact on large obstacles and rough roads. Still, visually, this is one of the great strengths of the GR Yaris. It is compact enough for Dhaka yet looks as though it has just escaped from a rally stage.

Interior

Inside, the GR Yaris RZ High Performance is much more serious than the word "Yaris" suggests. The driver gets a properly focused cockpit with a GR-branded leather steering wheel, performance-oriented instrumentation and supportive sports seats. High Performance versions use premium sports seats combining Brin Naub material and synthetic leather, giving considerably more support than an ordinary economy hatchback. The driving position is excellent. Controls fall naturally to hand, the steering wheel feels substantial and the manual gearbox gives the driver exactly the sort of mechanical involvement missing from most modern small cars. There is also enough technology to prevent the experience from feeling prehistoric. Automatic climate control, touchscreen audio, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the cabin perfectly usable for daily driving. Then you look behind the front seats. There are only four seats and three doors. Rear access requires moving the front seat forward, which is charming once and irritating thereafter. Adults can sit there, but they won't be writing you thank-you letters. For Bangladesh, the interior is therefore excellent for two people and acceptable for four. The cabin's biggest strength is its driver-focused design. Its biggest weakness is that practicality was clearly invited to the meeting but never allowed to speak.

Features

The GR Yaris RZ High Performance manages an unusual trick: it combines serious performance hardware with enough technology to make daily ownership pleasant.

The current car can have an 8-inch display audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, connected navigation and premium audio depending on specification. Toyota's Japanese specification also includes automatic climate control, digital instrumentation, USB Type-C charging and useful cabin storage.

The really impressive equipment, however, is not the touchscreen.

It is the engineering underneath.

RZ High Performance receives performance-focused tyres, upgraded brakes, tuned suspension and the GR-FOUR AWD system. The newer car also offers an 8-speed GR-DAT automatic for buyers who want fast shifts without operating a clutch pedal in Dhaka traffic.

Toyota Safety Sense adds pre-collision braking, lane-departure assistance, lane-tracing assistance, adaptive/radar cruise control, automatic high beam and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring is also standard on current RZ High Performance versions.

Some Bangladesh-imported cars will have different equipment because Japanese-market options and connected services vary.

If anything deserves improvement, it is rear-seat practicality and storage. But Toyota clearly spent the budget where enthusiasts would rather see it: chassis, brakes, tyres and drivetrain.

Safety

The GR Yaris RZ High Performance has a surprisingly sophisticated safety package underneath its mischievous exterior. Basic protection includes multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, traction control, electronic stability control, seatbelt systems, ISOFIX and tyre-pressure monitoring. The four-wheel ventilated disc brake setup is particularly serious, while the High Performance version adds large performance-oriented calipers and high-friction pads. Then there is Toyota Safety Sense. Current cars include pre-collision safety with automatic braking, lane-departure alert, lane-tracing assistance, radar cruise control, automatic high beam and road-sign assistance. Blind-spot monitoring is also standard on RZ High Performance. This is especially useful in Bangladesh. A motorcycle can appear beside you, a CNG can stop without warning and a bus can apparently decide that lane markings are merely decorative. Driver assistance cannot solve Dhaka traffic, but it can provide another layer of protection. The mechanical safety is arguably even more important. GR-FOUR AWD gives the driver strong traction, while the chassis, tyres and brakes are designed around high-performance driving. There is no reason to pretend the car is invincible. It is still a small four-seat performance hatch, and a badly repaired accident car can be dangerous regardless of how many airbags it has. For a clean, properly maintained example, however, the GR Yaris RZ High Performance has a very strong combination of active and passive safety technology.

Driving Experience

This is where the GR Yaris RZ High Performance earns every letter in its name. The original 2022–2023 car produces 272 hp and 370 Nm from its tiny 1.6L three-cylinder turbo. The 2024 facelift raises that to 304 hp and 400 Nm. The numbers are absurd when you consider the car's size. The GR-FOUR AWD system is the magic ingredient. Instead of wasting power through a single driven axle, the system gives the car tremendous traction and allows the chassis to put its engine output onto the road effectively. The result is acceleration that feels considerably more violent than the little Toyota's dimensions suggest. The steering is quick and the suspension is firm. On a good road, the car feels alive, eager and remarkably precise. On a bad Bangladeshi road, it feels like someone has replaced the suspension with a detailed report on every pothole. That is the trade-off. Dhaka traffic is surprisingly entertaining with the automatic version, while the 6MT is more engaging for enthusiasts who enjoy working the car themselves. On highways, the chassis feels planted and the AWD gives confidence when overtaking. Fuel economy is not its strongest argument. Around 7–8.5 km/L in heavy city use is realistic, while 11–13 km/L on open highways is achievable with restraint. The GR Yaris is not trying to be a comfortable family Toyota. It is trying to make you grin. And rather annoyingly, it succeeds.
EXPLORE THE RANGE

Variants

The RZ High Performance sits near the enthusiast heart of the GR Yaris range.

The standard RZ gives buyers the core GR Yaris formula: 1.6L turbo power, GR-FOUR AWD, compact dimensions and a serious performance chassis. It is the more sensible choice for someone who wants the experience without chasing every high-performance upgrade.

The RZ High Performance is for the person who actually cares about the details. Depending on year, it adds higher-spec wheels and tyres, performance-oriented suspension and differential equipment, upgraded braking hardware and more aggressive equipment. Toyota also offers premium forged BBS wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres on applicable specifications.

The RC is more competition-focused and strips away equipment to provide a better foundation for motorsport and modification.

Newer cars also introduce the 8-speed GR-DAT automatic, while the traditional 6-speed iMT remains available. Toyota developed the automatic with motorsport testing, rather than simply dropping a conventional gearbox into the car and calling it a day.

For Bangladesh, I would choose the RZ High Performance if driving enjoyment is the priority. The standard RZ is the better value proposition for someone who wants a slightly more sensible version.

But whichever one you buy, condition matters enormously.

A clean 2022–2023 272 hp High Performance with excellent auction history can be a much better purchase than a newer 304 hp car that has been poorly repaired.

The GR Yaris is a specialist Toyota, and Bangladesh buyers should treat it accordingly.
