Respectable safety with sensible limitations
The Fielder Hybrid EX is considerably safer in concept than its older predecessors because it brings modern Toyota driver-assistance technology into a very familiar wagon package.
Toyota's safety equipment includes ABS, Brake Assist, EBD, traction control and vehicle stability control. Airbags provide protection for occupants, while ISOFIX mounting points make the car more useful as a family vehicle.
The most significant upgrade is Toyota Safety Sense. Forward-collision protection and Lane Departure Warning give the driver assistance that simply did not exist on older Fielder generations.
But there is a temptation to look at the word “ADAS” and assume the car has every modern electronic safety system known to mankind.
It doesn't.
You should not expect blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, autonomous parking, 360-degree camera technology or sophisticated rear cross-traffic collision avoidance as standard factory equipment.
For Bangladesh, the condition of the individual imported car is also crucial.
A vehicle with properly functioning airbags, ABS, stability control, good tyres and an untouched chassis is vastly preferable to a heavily repaired accident car with impressive-looking accessories.
The braking hardware is conventional, using ventilated front discs and rear drums, supplemented by regenerative braking from the hybrid system. For a lightweight 1.5L wagon, that is perfectly sensible.
So the Fielder Hybrid EX is not a modern luxury safety fortress.
But it has the fundamental active and passive safety equipment you want, plus useful driver assistance.
For a practical family wagon, that is a respectable combination.
