The Corolla X Hybrid is not fast. It does not need to be.
The 1.8-litre hybrid system produces around 140 PS, and the electric motor gives the car immediate response from a standstill. There is no conventional automatic gearbox endlessly deciding which gear it should be in because there aren't any conventional gears to begin with.
In Dhaka, this is wonderful.
The car creeps through traffic smoothly, regenerative braking captures energy and the petrol engine can shut down when conditions allow. Instead of fighting traffic, the Corolla simply glides through it.
On the highway, performance is adequate rather than exciting. The car will overtake normally, but a full cabin and luggage will remind you that Toyota designed this machine for efficiency rather than drag racing.
The suspension is comfortable and the steering is predictable. The 15-inch tyres on the X are actually an advantage on Bangladesh roads because their taller sidewalls absorb impacts better than the W×B's low-profile tyres.
Long-distance comfort is one of the Corolla's strengths. Fuel stops become less frequent, the cabin remains composed and the hybrid system works quietly.
It is not a car that makes you grin every time you accelerate.
It is a car that makes you realise, after several months, that you have spent remarkably little money driving it.
